Welfare is supposed to be temporary, only for a short time to help people during a tough time. The system is taken advantage of too often and many people don't look for work and just depend on their checks to support them. This is not fair to people who are working and have to pay the money that helps these people who aren't doing anything to help themselves. It is very difficult to fix the system though because there are also a lot of people who are trying to find work and just can't and it wouldn't be fair to take away their benefits because of the people who abused the system. Some changes must be made to keep this system helping those who actually need it and keep people from just relying on others to support them.
There should be penalties for people who aren't looking for work or improving their skills. Education should be encouraged to help people on welfare be able to take control of their lives and not have to use welfare any longer. There also should be better incentives to work, not losing all benefits at a certain point. As people earn more money their welfare should decrease, but the total money they receive should increase to provide a reason for them to work more. There should also be more checks to make sure welfare recipients are looking for work or improving their education and if they aren't they should stop receiving benefits. Welfare needs to be thought of as a short term help not a long term solution for unemployed people.
It is inefficient to pay people to be lazy and not work. If they did not get pay they would be much more likely to work harder at finding a job and be less picky about where they worked. Welfare should be used when people are in between jobs not to encourage long periods of unemployment. When welfare recipients can't find work for a long time there should be a system in place to find a job for them. Then they would be employed again and need less or no money from welfare to support them. These changes could improve the welfare system, the living conditions of many lower income Americans, and save taxpayers a lot of money.

Post a CommentI love this article. I totally agree with you. Not everyone on welfare is lazy and you pointed that out. I think the government needs to restrict some food stamps and make some of the people on welfare work. I mean yes not like make them go to college and get a high paying job put they need to get of their lazy asses and do something...like shoveling snow in winter, packing up groceries in the stores, or even walking dogs. these people need to stop taking from the working people!!
Yes, I know what welfare is, because I have been there. I once lived lived on the street for years. The problem of welfare is the way it's dispensed. There should be no food stamps, vouchers or anything that can be used for trade. Instead every community should have place where those who cannot afford food or a safe place to sleep can find help in exchange for volunteering their labor to the whole. The government purchasing food from farmers and combines to keep the prices at a specified level. Instead of letting this food go to waste in warehouses, set up community aid centers with prepared meals, showers and places to sleep.
I'm sick of people basbing the poor and calling them all lazy. Do you even know what "welfare" is? Can you name the program? Welfare as you seem to imagine it ceased to exist as of 1996. There is no more AFDC, TANF program, which is called TEMPORARY ASSISTANCE FOR NEEDY FAMILIES, replaced it after 1996. Understand the word temporary, and a family can recieve it for a LIFETIME maximum of 60-months, no matter what happens to them in the future. And this program does all the other things that you claim is needed to reform welfare.
Or are you saying the government should cut foodstamps and medicaid? The vast majority of FAMILIES on these programs have full-time jobs. Their jobs are not enough to make ends meet. Maybe we should raise the minimum wage so people who have full-time jobs don't need government programs to supplement their incomes. But you know how conservatives feel about that.
this is a great article
