For the first time in months, I felt together. Sharp. In hurting myself, I had at last found a way to release the pressure. But it was more than that. I'd discovered a way to control my feelings. Just because self-mutilation wasn't deemed, an acceptable coping mechanism didn't mean I was going to stop doing it.
Victoria Leatham, Bloodletting: A Memoir of Secrets, Self-Harm and survival
Why cut? Why do bodily harm to ones own self? Well, let me ask you this. Why drink? Why become a sex addict or drug addict? Well all of these mental illnesses derive from a horrid event or number of life changing events to occur in a person's life. Once the act has been committed, the victim goes into a self-preservation mode. They lock up all the bad stuff and they walk around with the see through signs of trauma in their man/woman bags! So here we have people that have been harmed, violated and mentally abused, how do you think they handle their issues?
Well with cutting...the individual feels that if he/she cuts themselves and allows the blood to run out of their bodies that they are helping relieve their stress. The problem is simply running out of them! This displays poor coping mechanisms. People cope with stress, bad news, or sudden life experiences all differently. Now, the sane individual would handle the issues in an a-z type of format. A on edge, kind of anxious person may handle the issues from z to a, a to u, u to c and so forth. No basic order, very random, but the attempt to deal is presented. Now with that person who has bad coping mechanisms, will go to the extreme. Cutting or maybe...suicide.
Take a look below at the facts. Fact son why it's done, all the way to telling the signs will be presented.
Again, why Cut?
1) Poor coping abilities.
2) No support. No one to talk to.
3) Chemical imbalance
4) Inability to express themselves
5) Individuals who cut are also linked to having other mental health care issues. (Bi-polar disorder and depression)
6) It's an emotional exit. This helps them relieve tension.
7) IT'S SAFE. Many cutter's feel that cutting is safer than committing suicide. Most cutter's do not want to dies, but they view it as a safe way to release stress or tension.
How can you tell?
1) Individual wears long sleeves all the time, no matter the season.
2) Child/teen does not allow you to see their body at all.
3) The individual is very private and withdrawn.
4) The individual lies about the cut marks on his/her arm. Cat or dog scratches.
5) Frequent complaints of incidents to ones own self.
What do you do?
1) GO TO THE PSYCHIATRIST ASAP!
2) TAKE THE PRESCRIBED MEDS.
3) PLENTY OF THERAPY IS NEEDED
4) COPING MECHANISM ISM MUST BE TAUGHT
5) CONTINUED HELP UNTIL THE PSYCHIATRIST RELEASES THEM.
