You Already Know the Person
One of the biggest pros of dating a friend is that there is no awkward "get to know you" phase. From my experience, a first date is the most awkward date because you do not know each person's likes and dislikes. Already knowing the person before advancing into a relationship allows you to determine if they are the right match for you. From my experience, I have found that having a friendship with someone before the relationship stage makes everything less awkward and fluid.
Established Connection
One of the biggest hurdles to overcome when dating someone new is establishing an emotional connection. When dating a friend you already have an emotional connection. However, before rushing to date your best friend, make sure that you both want a connection that goes beyond friendship. I have seen numerous relationships fail because both parties could not get past the friendship phase. Be sure to understand what both of you want before taking the next step, otherwise it could ruin the friendship as well as the relationship.
Comfort Level
Were you comfortable immediately with the last person you dated? You were probably not, unless you knew them before the first date. Dating a friend establishes a comfort level that is not present in most new relationships. As a guy, I base my opinion on whether or not to pursue a relationship with a girl based on my comfort level from the first date. If you can be yourself around your friend then you should be comfortable around your new partner. However, keep in mind that if you have been friends long enough and got to hear every detail about their past relationships, it may ruin that comfort level.
Flaws
We all have flaws, some of us snore, take hours to become presentable to the public, or talk more than we should. Flaws are what make us unique from every person. Friends know you better than anyone else, which makes dating a friend a great opportunity if you are not someone who likes to reveal your flaws to a new partner. Your friend will know every quirk and flaw that makes you unique, which makes him or her a prime candidate for your new relationship.
