A lot of things I have heard from the "non-daycare" users is that germs are terrible in daycare centers. True, maybe, but think about it. You have more people in one area than you do at a private house, so of course there will be more germs around. But what people don't realize is that most reputable daycare facilities emphasize cleaning and disinfecting. How many private homes mop and sweep their floors everyday? How many private home providers sterilize their utensils and plates after every use? How many private homes sanitize the eating areas after every meal? How many babysitters "teach" children the proper way to wash their hands and make sure that it actually gets done? How many times do you wash and sterilize the toys your baby or toddler plays with? Most daycares do this on a regular basis. So, yes, there may be more germs around than at a private sitter, but daycares have strict practices in place to kill as many of those germs that private places may not.
Another argument is that their children get more nurturing, love, and attestation from a private sitter than they would ever get a daycare center. This is not necessarily true. One thing to think about is that most people that baby-sit have children of their own, so chances are that your child won't get all of the sitter's attention. Also, with daycare centers, there are laws that govern the child to teacher ratio. Meaning, you can only have so many children per every teacher. This is strictly enforced by the state. Where as a private provider can skirt around the law without getting caught. Also, the "teacher" in a daycare facility gets paid to stay with the kids and do various tasks and lessons. They don't have to cook or clean while watching your children. Daycare facilities have their own cleaners or it is done after hours. Also, the daycare workers can't be on the phone having casual conversations to just anyone, or play on the computer. Private sitters can and some do, thus not giving your children the attention they may need. Kids at daycare facilities are watched all the time and have all of the attention from the daycare workers constantly.
Kids in daycare facilities also learn socializing skills at an early age. They are exposed to other kids their own age from the first day they are brought into the daycare. These skills will help them the rest of their lives. In addition to the skills, they develop friendships and bonds that can last a life time.
One real positive point about daycares is their dependability. If someone gets sick or can't watch the kids at a daycare, the daycare will generally get a substitute teacher in. There is no worry about getting a call in the early morning saying that your kids can't be watched today. There is no scurrying on your part to find a substitute or fear of having to call in to work because your sitter called off, again. Daycare centers are highly dependable.
There are arguments for and against daycare facilities, just as there are arguments for and against private sitters. But whoever you choose to watch over your children, be sure to do your homework and get references. You see videos on TV of those watching over kids that should NEVER be around children. So, whichever you choose, INVESTIGATE, INVESTIGATE, INVESTIGATE. The well being of your child is so much more important than being able to get to work or go out for the evening.

Post a CommentMy observation: kids do best when one parent just loves, loves, loves them, and spends tons of time with them. From what I've seen, a mom like that can innoculate her kid against all kinds of difficulties and tragedies.
Daycare centers--no matter how clean, well staffed, etc.--don't have that investment in your child.
Note: lots of parents do lousy jobs of rearing their children. I have seen few parents--mom or dad--who live up to what I've described in paragraph one. But I've seen it in practice--I've got a sister and a few friends who rear their children with that amount of love. The results are tremendous.
(I do think all parents love their children ... but I've also seen a lot of anger, mistreatment, and poor family management.)
I have worked in several centers as well as had my own home daycare for 15 years while my kids were growing up. Even the "GOOD" ones are only as good as the staff they hire. Remember that.
I am in SC now and my 4 yr old grandson went to one in Moore SC. He is virtually fearless happy guy. He would cry and cry at the dinner table and beg me to have an at home day EVERYDAY.
Twice he came home with bloody scratches down both arms. A bully in the daycare did it. There was no acknowledgment. Then he kept saying Ms.director spanked him with Mr Ruler for wetting in his pull up.
This woman threatens the children with mr ruler as well as administers the spanking. I know one of the former teachers(my daughter)
Don't send your kids to the Childrens cove.
I turned them in to DSS but they are still in operation.
Not all Daycares are bad places. Just know what is going on within the obe you choose. show up unexpectidly. Observe.
Some now have a cam you can access by compute
you are right daycare center do have a bad reputation why because they don't do what they say they suppose to do. i have work at daycare center for 15 years and they are not right. i perfer to use a day home type center. because there is one on one. they give better care. your child can learn more.
I'm pretty sure the daycare kat talked about is the exception to the rule. I'm in charelston, South Carolina, and every day care I vistied was clean and the kids were attended to.
My mother-in-law watched my first daughter. They stayed home all day and watched TV. My daughter was still on the bottle, was afraid of people, and didn't talk. As soon as I put her in day care she learned how to talk, stopped using the bottle and became more social.
My second daughter has been in day care since she was 6 weeks old. She is so much more advanced than my first daughter was at the same age. They learn social skills by being around other kids their own age. They also learn so much more than a lazy relative bothers to do.
I prolly wouldn't send my children to the specific daycare that Kat was talking about. My kids are also WELL taken care of at our daycare. We can make surprise visits and they are so loving and doting on the kids. The older kids don't necessarily want a lot of cuddling...but the toddlers and the babies get all the lap time and hugs that they want. And the daycare is clean. Sure when u get a lot of people together, there ARE going to be more germs. But our daycare really does take precautions. With kids running in and out of our house all the time, I can almost guarantee that the daycare has less germs than our house. It all depends...but the social aspect of it all is amazing. The kids learn at a very early age that life does NOT just evolve around JUST them...that there are other people to consider. There are pros and cons either way you go, but do your homework either way. There is good and bad day cares....just like good and bad sitters. Nice read thanks!
WOW!! I take my kids to a daycare and have never had the happen. I have been there when kids do get fussy, making several surprise visits, and if the daycare worker is too busy she calls for back up. The ONLY time that I have seen a child fuss go un attended to was when they were in a time out. I guess The Caring Station in Millersburg really must know what they are doing. There is a teacher to child ration....with babies I do believe it's like 1 to 5 or 6...after that they add another teacher. I have yet to hear or see any child cry for half an hour, because they were left unattended due to over crowding. There are laws that govern this in Ohio. I give credit to The Caring Station for being well above what other daycares centers provide.
I am a thirteen year veteran of the childcare industry, and I have seen it all. Regardless of sanitation practices, children who attend large childcare facilities do get sick quite often. Children do suffer in the are of individual attention. If you have five infants to one teacher, there is no way to meet anything other than basic human needs for each child. No matter how hard you try. I have seen babies cry for up to thirty minutes while waiting their turn to be fed, not because the childcare provider is mean, or unfit, but because she simply has her hands full caring for another child. It's pretty much the same in all daycare centers because of the large number of children that need care.
