Why Demi Lovato was My Favorite Celebrity Twitter User

Before she deleted her twitter account and checked into rehab, Demi Lovato (ddlovato) was the celebrity I most enjoyed following on Twitter. Her posts are refreshingly down-to-earth and honest. While Britney Spears' Twitter account is very obviously PR-filtered, Demi Lovato's unfiltered hopes, dreams, and, thoughts come through in her tweets.

Unlike many young stars who carry themselves like miniature adults, Demi Lovato actually came across as a normal 18-year-old girl. Demi Lovato's tweets are a mix of lighthearted and serious. Showing a quirky side, she writes "Sitting in my own house right now.. at my own kitchen table.. wearing my own socks. This is so cool... I own things."

On the serious side, tweets such as "Life is funny.. But life is really amazing when you have incredible friends and someone to share it with," show that she is a down-to-earth girl who appreciates the simple things in life.

Sometimes she wears her heart on her sleeve and isn't afraid to show vulnerability. Last Christmas, she tweeted that she wanted a boy like Edward Cullen. "Dear Santa, I want a boy for Christmas... wanna hook a sista up?! Oh, and not just any boy.. one that holds the door open for you, and writes hand written letters, and spends time with the rents.. ya hurrd?" "Edward Cullen, WHY CAN'T YOU BE REAL?!"

Sometimes Demi Lovato's vulnerability can cause her to take things too much to heart. For example, when columnists posted unflattering photos of her, she took to Twitter to chastise these sites. "I love how some gossip sites deliberately post pictures with disgusting angles of me. Hahaha thanks guys... Thaaanks. Ps. I hate you." Yet this type of response only shows that she's not afraid to take on the tabloids or tell us how she really feels.

On her Twitter account, Demi Lovato showed that she is fiercely loyal to her friends. In October 2009, when tabloids posted racy party photos of "Hannah Montana's" Cody Linley, Demi Lovato was quick to defend her friend. "Leave Cody alone. Big deal.. He partied too hard. Get over it. Sometimes people DO make mistakes.. But this guy doesn't deserve all that ..."

Demi Lovato also used Twitter to campaign against school bullying, an issue that hits close to home. "RT if you want to end bullying! Join @PACERCenter today: The Day We Unite Against Bullying." And Demi Lovato walks the walk. In the video that she re-tweeted, she talked about her own experiences being bullied at school and how she uses these experiences to help others.

Demi Lovato occasionally used Twitter to keep her fans up-to-date with her professional endeavors. Recently she talked about her tour in Mexico as well as the latest episode of "Sonny With a Chance." Yet her Twitter account is a healthy mix of personal and professional. Although I enjoy following her career, it's nice to also see a glimpse of the real person behind the TV screen.

Its a shame that Demi Lovato is no longer on Twitter, but it's understandable that she needs the time away from social media in order to work out her own problems. Hopefully we'll see a healthy happy Demi Lovato soon, on or off Twitter.
