Why a Diamond Grading Certificate May Be Even More Important Than the Diamond

Jenniifer Blake
Diamonds are one of the most beautiful and expensive natural stones on earth and as such are graded and certified according the certain industry standards, many buyers want to know exactly what the diamond certificate describes about the diamond but may be afraid to ask for fear of looking foolish or uncultured. When purchasing a diamond, every buyer needs to understand all the information stated on the diamond certificate since this is the accurate description of the product that is being purchased.

The diamond certificate is also commonly referred to as a diamond grading report and is generally shown to any prospective buyer of a diamond (and given to the purchaser for their own personal use). The diamond certificate tells you 5 very important characteristics of the diamond that you are purchasing: the cut, the color, the weight, the clarity and the carat rating. The diamond certificate comes from the Gemology Institute of America and accurately describes the diamond that you are purchasing to avoid unknowing customers from being scammed by unscrupulous jewelers. Some dealers actually charge a small amount to have the diamond certificate created but this is well worth the cost, especially if you may have to sell the diamond later.

If you have a very large, unique or expensive diamond, it should always be insured against loss, theft or any other accidental occurrences. When insuring any diamond, the insurance company will ask the owner for, among other things a diamond grading certificate. This will give the insurance company's contracted diamond appraiser an accurate base to make an estimate on the value of your diamond.

Based on a jeweler's reluctance to display a diamond grading certificate for your diamond or his reluctance to display a diamond grading certificate to you, you can accurately judge just how honest they are. Any jeweler who does not display a diamond certificate on request should be avoided at all costs to ensure that you are not scammed.

All diamond certificates which are genuine have special features and watermarks which make it very hard to duplicate, you should never accept any other certificate other than the one issued by the Gemological Institute of America.

When buying diamonds, you should never avoid purchasing a diamond certificate, many purchasers of diamonds never inquire about their certificate and the jeweler happily obliges since the person will never know the truth about their diamond and if they overpaid. In the effort against being scammed when buying diamonds, a diamond grading certificate may just be the most important thing of all.

Thank you for this, so many people don't know the difference between different grading labs. I would never buy a diamond without a GIA-certificate. Other diamond grading certificates are far less accurate, less respected and less reliable. GIA created the 4 C's in the first place and they have the strictest grading standards.

The carat IS the measure of weight.
A grading report will describe the quality characteristics of a diamond but it will not describe the diamond's BEAUTY. You need to see this for yourself. Appreciate the sparkle (dispersion and scintillation) and the shine (lustre).
Remember you are buying a diamond not a piece of paper!
