Why Did Stephany Flores Go into Hotel Room with Van Der Sloot?

What Made Stephany Flores Feel Safe Going into a Hotel Room with Joran Van Der Sloot?

Jillita Horton
Stephany Flores hardly knew Joran van der Sloot when she decided it was a smart idea to enter a hotel room alone with him. Joran van der Sloot, 22, is a suspect in the murder of Stephany Flores, 21, who was murdered in a hotel room in the Peruvian capital May 30, 2010.

Video surveillance shows Joran van der Sloot, a suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway five years ago, in the hotel with Stephany Flores, a college student, and she appears to be very voluntarily following him. Apparently they had just met at a casino, and according to news reports, the young lady (not "girl" as cable news keeps referring to her; she was 21 years old!) had won $5,000 at the casino.

Further video shows Joran van der Sloot entering the hotel room, with Stephany Flores voluntarily right behind (this crushes any kidnap theories). It was 5 a.m.! What was Stephany Flores thinking when she decided that the best thing she could do for herself was enter a hotel room with a man she just met?

What must her parents be thinking? Almost four hours later, Joran van der Sloot is seen leaving the hotel room, wearing a different shirt, and then walking out of the lobby: damming evidence for finding him guilty of murdering Stephany Flores.

I can't help but wonder if Stephany Flores's parents have been racking their brains wondering why their daughter would exhibit such low standards by entering a hotel room at 5 a.m. (or any time, for that matter) with a man she just met at a casino (or anywhere, for that matter). Did we not teach her self-respect, self-restraint and morals, they might be wondering.

Why else would Stephany Flores agree to go to a hotel with Joran van der Sloot, but to have sex? But now news reports say she was a lesbian. If this is true, then once again: Why oh why did she go inside a hotel room at 5 a.m. with a man she just met? This was a horribly stupid decision. She was not dragged kicking and screaming into that hotel room. She did not appear to be drugged or intoxicated. Like many women the world over, Stephany Flores of her own free will decided to enter a hotel room with a complete stranger man. Not a smart move, especially since she had $5,000 on her person.

Evidence shows that Joran van der Sloot's motive was robbery. The victim was found clothed and there's no sign of sexual assault. Van der Sloot apparently charmed Stephany Flores at the casino. Presumably, she didn't recognize his face from five years ago after it was splashed all over the media. Her family didn't know whom he was until they Googled his name.

But even if he had told her his name was John Smith, and even if she had never even heard of the name Joran van der Sloot -- what on earth was Stephany Flores thinking when she thought it was a bright idea to go into a hotel room with a man she just met? If it wasn't for sex, what was it for, to massage her aching back? No reason could possibly fall under the category of smart move.

If she was attracted to him, she could have insisted that they meet during the day in a public place and get acquainted. Since the motive points to robbery, van der Sloot most likely would have rejected this idea. But then, the rejection would be a great tip-off that this man is not to be trusted, and in that scenario, Flores could have done some rejecting of her own, then left the casino without him. Though it's been reported that she was a lesbian, maybe she wanted to try straight sex, or perhaps that back massage is a more plausible explanation for why Stephany Flores went into a hotel room with Joran van der Sloot at 5 a.m. ?!

If van der Sloot had agreed to meet in broad daylight at a public spot for lunch, Flores then could have told him, "I have morals. I don't sleep with men I just met. I must be dating them for several months before I get intimate." Then she could have waited for his reaction. (A woman must realize that if this announcement sends a man running, she just scared off a real creep.) At that point, van der Sloot would have abandoned his robbery plan, since to commit the robbery unseen, he'd have to do it in a hotel room.

However, I'm sure that the lunch date would never materialize, since Joran van der Sloot wanted to get Stephany Flores alone, since she had the $5,000 on her, and would not likely have this money on her the next day over lunch.

Stephany Flores made a decision that cost her her life, a decision she could have safely averted had she simply gone back to her own place after winning that money, taken a shower and went to bed. Despite this tragic news, women the world over will continue going into hotel rooms with men they just met ... a decision that is never intelligent, never rational, never moral.

Independently of Stephany poor judgement or the mistake she made by following a stranger into his hotel room, it is not up to Joran van der sloot or anybody else to punish her by breaking her neck, nose,a few ribs, pulling one of her eyes of the socket etc Whowever suggests that she deserved such punishment for her mistake (including the author of this article)this person is as much mentally sick as Joran van der sloot.

If Aruba would have just done there job to start with and just arrested him for the murder of Natalee Holloway this would not even be a issue... I blame Aruba.. Aruba allow Paulus Van Der Sloot to us his high power connections to keep his son out of prison and to cover up what really happened.. If you ask me Aruba Authhorities prob know where Natalee Holloways Body is they have prob known everything from the very 1st time Joran was arrested and because of politics and Paulus Van Der Sloot's status in Aruba they all worked together to cover it up.. And because of that may Paulus Van Der Sloot rest in piece (sudden heart attack) hummmmm wierd how things work out...... My heart and prays are with the Flores Family.... And to the Holloways...

I don't understand why the person who wrote this article, has the right to judge this woman. It makes no different why she went to his room. She didn't deserve to die. I am a mother I have a daughter. My daughter is in her late 30's. But when she was in her early 20's I would hope she would not have gone into a stranger's hotel room. But no one knows for sure. We all have had a lapse of good judgement at one time or another. My heart and prays are with the Flores family.

To the posters who are upset by the content of this article - and I mean this with complete respect - I think maybe you're misunderstanding the author's purpose. I don't think (at least I hope) the author is criticizing Stephany Flores. I think she's pleading with all of us to be careful. Sadly, there are terrible, horrible people everywhere. Therefore, you can NEVER assume that by going into a hotel room with someone you know that you are not putting yourself at serious risk. I am a mother, and I would be extremely upset if I knew my daughter had done this. I hope she's trying to tell us to urge our children, sisters, etc to ALWAYS think about your morals, common sense, good judgement, whatever you want to call it when you are faced with a situation to do something that young people might do in the heat of the moment. Don't risk it - it just isn't worth your life!! I apologize if any of this offends anyone - that is not my intention nor do I think it was the author's. Also pl

I think she went to the room as Joran borrowed money from her and he said he was going to pay her back. You can not get into someones computer without a password!

When you watch the video of her in the casino it is obvious that she is "leary" of him and I think she does recognize him as being "the guy" involved in the Aruba case. I think she did have the intention of busting him and it all went astray on her. Very unfortunate, but I hope she can rest in peace and somehow know that in the end she hopefully has still busted him! Anyone that can't say anything nice about her judgement of going into that room needs to comment somewhere else.

That's just the point, nobody, at this point really knows why she went to his room. So, please don't make such harsh judgements, and write such an atrocious article. Just write the true facts that are know and don't add your own personal beliefs. Show some compassion if you can.

I read very early on that she had called a friend and told her she know Van Der Sloot was the guy who did in Natalee Holloway. My theory is that she went to his room to dig up some info on his laptop that linked him to the murder and she ended up getting caught and he deep sixed her. I have no doubt that her intentions were nefarious, but t did not warrant a murder. This whole thing stinks to high heaven.

Jillita Horton, you must be one uptight person to write such a judgemental article. Tell me, have you or have you not, made any mistakes in your life? Please don't cast stones at others, especially at a victim of a murder. Her parents are in enough pain without this derogatory article.

To the post below this one, when we get on buses, trains and airplanes it's because we have to for transportation. The commentary asks why did this Stephany Flores go into that little room with Joran Van der sloot? It wasn't for necessary transportation, that is for sure. Some people here make it sound like everyone at some point in their lives went in to a hotel room with a stranger. No, most people I bet never did this. Not me. Not my mother, not my 2 sisters, never. I liked this commentary because it looks at the other side.
