Why Does Google Rank My Site so Low?

If you've written all your site content and you've put your keywords in there but Google isn't very interested in ranking your site highly, you might be wondering what you're doing wrong. Most likely, it's one of three main problems: (a) You've overstuffed your site content with keywords, causing Google and other search engines to see your site as spam, (b) you don't have any outgoing or incoming links to other sites or content, or internal linkbacks to other pages on your site, or (c) you don't update your content or offer fresh information often enough.

There could be other issues, but these are generally the reasons why you get a low ranking in Google. In order to really understand that, though, it's important to look at these problems a little more closely.

When it comes to keywords, it used to be that site owners would write copy that was essentially garbage and they would cram it full of keywords so that it would appear on the first page of Google. However, search engines have gotten much smarter now. Because of that they catch these kinds of things and they mark them as spam.

Potential customers to your site don't like them, either, because they see that the copy is poorly written and it doesn't interest them. They usually click away and go somewhere else, so you end up losing out on someone who might have made a purchase from you if your copy had been well-written.

Links are important, too. They show that your site is being noticed by other sites, and they also show that you're writing content that offers more information than what's seen on one page. By linking to other sites (only relevant sites!), getting other sites (again, only those that are relevant to your site) to link to your site, and setting up internal links from one of your pages or posts to others, you provide more content and information to a wider audience. Search engines like that. So do people.

Updating content is also vital. People want to see something new when they come back to your site. If you don't update for a few weeks or a few months, people stop coming to your site and Google stops ranking it high because there isn't anything new to rank. It's a good idea to have a blog on your site or some other type of page that you update frequently by posting news, articles, or something timely on.

When you follow these simple rules and take the time to set your site up the right way, you'll have a lot better luck getting ranked by Google, and you'll also have a lot better luck in getting customers to come to your site and buy from you, whatever it is you're selling.
