Why Does Google Say 'Topeka'? the Reason

Blair Mathis
Google, showing once again that they're quite possibly the most awesome company in the world, has released an official blog post announcing that their new name is officially 'Topeka'. This comes as a way to honor the city formerly known as Topeka, which is now known as 'Google', a slick way to draw more tourists to the city.

According to Google Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt, "Early last month the mayor of Topeka, Kansas stunned the world by announcing that his city was changing its name to Google. We've been wondering ever since how best to honor that moving gesture. Today we are pleased to announce that as of 1AM (Central Daylight Time) April 1st, Google has officially changed our name to Topeka."

This may come to a surprise to some people, as Google is the name recognized as being the best search engine in the short history of the Internet. So prevalent is Google's Internet powers that thousands of people everyday threaten (unknowingly), to send the wealthy trademark into obscurity via phrases like, "I'd just Google him", or even worse, "I'd google him on Dogpile, that's what I'd do."

This change is sure to have its detractors, but that doesn't seem to be a concern for Goo...er, Topeka. A company with the huevos to make such a drastic change will certainly have the charm and charisma to slip its way through this adjustment. Still, you might want to start repeating the mantra now: "Google is Topeka, Google is Topeka, Google is Topeka."

In case you were wondering, there is no need to update any links you might have to Google - the domain name is staying the same, no doubtedly because of the memory-finger link that makes users automatically peck out 'Google' faster than their brain can switch from texting to chatting mode. There's no word about whether or not Google is planning to change their domain name, but considering the worth (the blinding, knee-shaking, incredible worth) of the Google.com domain, it doesn't seem likely.

So, in case you're scanning this article for the short version:

- Google is now Topeka.

- Topeka is still as awesome as Google.

- Google.com is still Google.com even though Google is now Topeka.- Oh, and you might want to check the date on your calendar.
