Why Does it Matter If Tim Tebow Makes it in the NFL?

Lee Andrew Henderson
Tim Tebow's college football career is coming to an end and the debate about his future in the NFL is beginning. Football players in college, particularly quarterbacks, don't always succeed in the NFL. Some people think the Heisman Trophy is even a curse of sorts because the winner doesn't tend to have a successful NFL career. The last two Heisman Trophy winners that were pretty good in college were Eddie George and Ricky Williams and neither of them have been all-time greats or anything. Many people are wondering if Tim Tebow will succeed or fail in the NFL.

I'm not here to debate one way or the other. I don't know if Tim Tebow will succeed in the NFL. I don't know if Tim Tebow will fail in the NFL. What I'm here to debate is why does it even matter?

Let's think about the things that Tim Tebow has accomplished in his four years at the University of Florida. Tim Tebow currently has a record of 32 - 5 and that could be 37 - 5 by the end of the season. The Florida Gators are currently on a 22 game winning streak. That could be 24 games by the end of the season.

Before Tim Tebow arrived at Florida the Gators only had one National Championships in their history. After Tim Tebow arrived the Florida Gators won two National Championships and two SEC Championships and they have a chance to win a third in both.

When Urban Meyer arrived at the University of Florida he gave the Gators three goals: 1. Win at home 2. Beat your rivals 3. Win the SEC. Since Tim Tebow arrived the Gators are 27 - 3 at the Swamp, 11 - 1 against their rivals and 33 - 5 against the SEC.

Before Tim Tebow voters refused to vote for a sophomore in the Heisman Trophy race but Tim Tebow was so great that he changed their mind. Nobody has won two Heisman Trophies but Tim Tebow could be the first. Tebow was the first quarterback to ever throw for 20 touchdowns and run for 20 touchdowns in one season. Tim Tebow broke the SEC record for rushing touchdowns. Tebow rushed for more rushing touchdowns than Herschel Walker.

How many other players in college football history have a resume this good? Not many, if any. On top of that Tim Tebow is as good a leader as you'll ever find. Tebow is as tough as a football player gets. Tebow is as competitive as you can possibly get. Tebow makes great grades, is a genuine nice guy and when his friends are off drinking and partying he is preaching to convicts and going on mission trips.

Why does it matter what Tim Tebow does in the NFL? Tim Tebow is going to go down in history as one of the all-time greats in the sport of college football. It shouldn't matter one bit what he does in the NFL. Would you rather be Jay Cutler or Aaron Rodgers just because they made it in the NFL? Would you rather be pretty good in college and pretty good in the NFL? Or would you rather be one of the all-time greats in one or the other? Because there is only one quarterback in the NFL that was both and even Peyton Manning never won National Championships or a Heisman.

There is only one reason why anybody would bring up the possibility that Tim Tebow isn't going to make it in the NFL and that is because they are drinking the haterade. They're jealous. They're tired of Tim Tebow winning all the time. They're tired of Florida winning all the time so they have to come up with some way to insult Tim Tebow. They can't say he doesn't win because he does. They can't say he sucks because it doesn't. They can't make fun of his rap sheet because he doesn't have one. The only chink in the Tim Tebow armor that anybody can find is that he might not be good in the NFL and we don't even know if that's true yet.

I do believe that Tim Tebow will not soon be forgot. Because he was a quarterback that not only broke your typical quarterback stats, he also broke some running back stats and set numerous NCAA and SEC and Gator records. Other greats were greats within their common skills. Tebow executed his talents over many skills. That takes an herculean effort that no other person in the college game has ever done. If there is not another phenom to come along soon and handily beat those records, Tim Tebow will become legend and spoken around campfires talking to our grandchildren about the great Tim Tebow throughout the world for years to come.
