Why Does Oprah's Opinion Matter?

Are You a Loyal Oprah Follower?

Heather Shockney
When Oprah Winfrey says she likes something it turns to gold. It could be anything from a book to toilet paper. If she mentions it on her show everyone rushes out to buy it. Oprah followers are very loyal. They will buy something even if they previously hated it, just because Oprah said it was the next best thing since sliced cheese. Why is this?

Oprah Winfrey's latest mention is who she supports in the presidential election. Her choice is Barack Obama. Does this mean the millions of Oprah followers are going to vote for him? It very well could happen. Why do people care so much about what Oprah thinks? She is a talk show host. Does this give her some special power? Do her opinions mean more than mine or yours?

Why are so many people swayed by the words of a television talk show host? Would you feel the same if Jerry Springer recommended a product? Would his views be taken as serious as Oprahs? Should a person vote for someone, or buy something just because someone with a talk show said to do so? Oprah is a person just like you, or I. The only difference is she has a television show. Does that make her qualified to decide who the next president should be? No more than any other person voting.

I am sick and tired of hearing a product or television show is one of Oprah's favorites. I would never vote for someone simply because a television talk show host said they were. People should make their own choices. They should not depend on something that Oprah says. She could be choosing the one that will benefit her most. This might not be the best choice for you.

It can be okay to listen to the reasons behind her choice, and then make up your own mind. Do not just do something because Oprah is. When she recommends a product or service chances are she is getting some type of kick back. She could be getting paid to recommend that product. This makes her opinions a little biased.

I am interested in knowing why a person takes Oprah's advice and recommendations so seriously. I want to know what makes her suggestions so much better than others. This is your chance to leave your input. Please answer the following questions in the comment section below.

1.Would you vote for someone just because Oprah said she was?

2.Have you bought an item because it was mentioned by Oprah?

3.Why do people care so much about what Oprah thinks?

Thank you for taking the time to fill me in on why Oprah's opinions matter so much.

Oprah, maybe you should have Lt. Governor Andre Bauer from S.C. on your show and ask him why he thinks the poor should starve to death? He posted on his facebook profile and I quote..I know you may think I should starve to death, but you need to understand only poor people should starve to death, and I say this because the poor are like stray cats. ( I will drown both in the river.) I know this has to be the most Ignorant statement a Democrat or Republican could ever make, and how could someone get elected with this kind of attitude. Ignorance is Society's downfall. Ignorance is not knowing: Stupidty is knowing you're ignorant and not doing anything about it!

My answers to 1 and 2 (as most other commenters here) are "No." As for the third, I suspect that enough people follow Oprah's advice that companies seek her stamp of approval. This implies that she probably has people who go though these Oprah-feature wannabe's for her and at least cut out the most obvious trash. This is slightly better and a lot easier than just trying random things for yourself. Since most people are too lazy to think most things through, this is an easy (though not smart) way of knowing what to think :-).

Those are the same questions we discussed over family meals. I don't buy anything just because Oprah said I should. I will not vote for Obama because Oprah said I should. I used to like Oprah. In her early years, she seemed truly compassionate and humble and had a gift for touching people's hearts. Now, I think her fame and fortune has made her a bit arrogant and egotistical. I find myself questioning her sincerety on certain broadcasts. It is more difficult now to dinstinguish between whether she is actually passionate about a topic or just seeking ratings and more notorioty. Great topic and great article!

One and two, NO. As for 3, probably because it's easier to let someone else think for you than to do it yourself.

Great article. I use to watch Oprah, but I haven't had the time or the desire to do so in a while. I cringed when I heard she was backing a presidential candidate. Yes, she has every right to do so, but I do know how much people take her word for things, like you said. I hope that people, especially those who are loyal followers, still make their own decision.

Although I don't watch Oprah, I do commend her for the great things she does. I think a lot of celebrities could learn from her example. Great article!

No on 1. On 2, well, I tried a couple desserts mentioned by her, but only because they sounded good, not because she said they were good. I am voting for Obama, but made that decision based on my own research. I don't think it's a good idea to follow after a celebrity's word on an important decision like that. I honestly don't know why people do it. My best guess is that Oprah has been around so long that people tend to feel comforted and trusting of her words, so they just follow what she does because since she's such a good person, they assume it's the thing to do. I'm really not sure, though.

No and No, but like an earlier post I have been made aware of books and products through her. I certainly don't hold her word as gospel. It scares me that she is backing any Presidential candidate because of all the lemmings that do follow her and hang on her every word. Would she still think Obama was "the one" if he was a skinny white guy named Bobby O'Rourke from Worcester? Doubt it. The things the Democrats are standing for and fighting for will not effect her at all should one of them be elected. Do you think a government run health care system will matter to her? Or to any of America's filthy rich. No way. That is what is so scary about the media and Hollywood getting in on the Presidential campaigns. The outcome doesn't really change anything in their little worlds. JMHO
