Why is My Dog Eating Grass?

Are you worried that something is wrong with your dog because he eats grass? Some people may even tell you that if your dog is eating grass that something is wrong with their digestive system. Many people believe this, but it's not true. Dogs actually eat grass because it's good for them. Their bodies need it. Some dogs may even throw up after eating it, but this is perfectly normal. Don't be alarmed.

Dogs have been eating grass for as long as they have been around. The grass actually does a lot of good for their body. It cleanses the body by getting rid of any impurities such as mucus and bile. It can even get rid of worms!

Dogs seem to really enjoy eating grass. However, we are not sure whether they just like the taste or if it's just a natural instinct for them to eat it. If your dog vomits after eating grass, then he probably had an upset stomach before eating the grass. If something is upsetting a dog's stomach and they eat grass, the grass helps the body to get rid of whatever is the problem. This is what causes the vomiting.

Some grasses are better for your dog than others. Cereal grasses have many vitamins, amino acids, and mineral in them which are great for your pet. Grass also has chlorophyll in it, which helps to relieve any pain in the body and also treats skin disease, infections, ulcers, and anemia.

Many people even grow specific grasses just for their pets in order to treat problems such as fleas, tumors, excessive shedding, diarrhea, anemia, cataracts, and many other problems. If you feed your dog grass, it won't try to eat the regular outdoor grass as much. If your dog does eat the grass outside, just be sure that it hasn't been sprayed with any fertilizers, weed killers, or other chemicals. This can be very dangerous for your pet if ingested. Also be on the lookout for any poisonous plants. If you are unsure about what's in your yard, you might just want to grow your own grass for your pets. This is actually the best for them.

When you feed grass to your pet, it needs to be cut or minced into very tiny pieces. At first, don't give your dog that much at one time. Just start with a teaspoon a day and increase gradually. You should feed about one tablespoon for every fifty pounds.

So if you are worried about your dog eating grass, hopefully this will ease your worries. The grass will not hurt your dog, and is actually good for them. Just watch them and make sure they do not eat grass excessively. If your dog is just eating too much grass then you may want to see your vet.

Our two year old schnauzer vomits about 45 minutes after each feeding. The food appears undigested and sometime there is grass in the food also. This has been going on about 3 months. We have had her to the vet several times. She does eat awfully fast and we have put a ball in her food to slow her down but it doesn't help.
