Why I Don't like Homeless People

Think Twice Next Time a Homeless Person Asks You for Money

Jim Buckler
Recently I have noticed the amount of homeless content producers that are featured on Associated Content. I feel compassionate for people in poverty but I have no respect for homeless people. Let's face it; the majority of them are drug addicts or just plain crazy. The next time you run into a homeless person and they ask for money, offer to buy them some food. I have offered to buy them food or share my food and the homeless people tell me that they have just ate at a local food kitchen or church. Chances are if a homeless person asks you for cash, they are just looking for money for drugs and alcohol because many places offer food for the homeless.

The problem I have with homeless people is that they are a burden on society. They use up the public works, if they are staying in a public park, my tax dollars are paying for the upkeep of the public park and they aren't contributing at all to society. This economic "free rider problem" is my basic contention with the homeless. You might say "Homeless people purchase alcohol and cigarettes, the tax on those products goes to the government"; well the problem is the money isn't theirs to begin with. Some homeless crackhead will steal your television, bicycle or kitchen appliances and try to hawk it to get their next fix; homeless people are responsible for a lot of crime. Even the ones that don't steal are guilty of being drunk in public and/or of disorderly conduct. These offenses use up law enforcement resources costing the working public even more money.

Not only are homeless people unsightly and smell bad. Walk into any homeless shelter and you'll smell the pungent odor of urine and find homeless people intoxicated from drinking Listerine. Sadly, homeless people are guilty of utilizing public places such as libraries and parks that are intended for tax payers. Churches and homeless shelter, almost all of which are exempt from taxes gladly support the homeless. They also clog up our legal system and use up other governmental resources for which they don't contribute any taxes to. They don't own any real estate or live in public housing; they don't live in houses or apartments.

San Francisco has a big homeless problem; however they have an innovative way of dealing with it. San Francisco's Homeward Bound program provides homeless people with a bus ticket to ship the problem off to a another city so the homeless person isn't San Francisco's problem anymore. A problem with the program was mentioned in the San Francisco chronicle. 13 homeless people were sent to Humboldt County and city officials were displeased with this. "What irked Humboldt officials was that, because of confidentiality rules that prohibited San Francisco from revealing the names of homeless clients, they didn't know who the 13 homeless people were, or where they went when they got there." The reason Humboldt County officials wanted to know the names of homeless people there was because Humboldt County is a major marijuana growing area and it is suspected that homeless people were harvesting dope for local farmers in the area in exchange for housing.

Now most homeless people are drug-addicts or crazy but I have absolutely nothing against homeless people that are trying to contribute to society and pay taxes. Nobody likes a free rider, so get a leg up and contribute to society homeless people. Think twice next time a homeless person asks you for money. If you really want to help out the homeless, donate some clothes or money to a local shelter or church.

I believe none of us should judge one another in a weak economy and with so many social problems. Some homeless work full time but earn a minimum wage paycheck and try to support a family - 1 in 4 homeless are children.

I know the statistics on this. Some are homeless because of an abusive spouse and divorce to escape the abuse they should have never had - some are victims of other people's cruelty.

I think judging other people when we have not walked in their shoes, is almost criminal.

What goes around comes around - hope the writer of this article is never homeless.

I have sympathy for the ones who just can't seem to get their life together because of either bad luck, a weakness for alcohol or drugs, or factors outside their control. The ones I don't have sympathy for are the ones who refuse help, want to live outside instead of in shelters and the ones who refuse to try to better their situation. Those, and the punks on Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley. They really need some tough love.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but your view of homeless people is narrow-minded and stereo-typical. I work with an organization that helps the homeless. What you have written is far from the truth; it is merely one small aspect of a bigger issue that many people from all walks of life are faced with. If a person is homeless due to drug or alcohol addiction, they deserve as much kindness and compassion as anyone else. They have a difficult disease to contend with and need help, not hate.

The Hate is SICKENING.The HATE is OLD.

    The HATE must STOP.

The General Statement of THIS IGNORANT FOOL IS ONE OF THE PROBLEMS.
Take DRUMM street for instance. Most of The Panhandlers are not homeless. The Homeless Baby Boomers who are in the Financial district are there because thay are running from the druggies.

Gavin Newsom lies and The People Hate the Baby Boomers veterans and let them die without dignity.

    BURN IN HELL HATERS.

They do not want to GET IT.

The Abused Services the Idiot talks about is the Issue. The Homeless Baby Boomers who have worked for many year and need the services during a recession are finding some abuser ADDICTS who have used Glide and St Anthony for twenty years Plus.

Until you understand QUIT HATING ALL THE HOMELESS.

    Especially the Baby Boomers Hiding.

That was a pretty funny editorial. Good lord homeless people smell...like, the smell is so bad, it sticks to the clothes of people around them. It stays on the chair they were sitting on.

Believe me. I know. I'm a victim of their stench. =|

This author obviously has no real Life experience. They're probably just some spoonfed, whiney rich creep who gets anything he wants because Mommy and Daddy pay for everything. That's why he has NO clue what real life is like and why he obviously doesn't have an education. Lazy rich boys don't have to go to school when they mooch off their parents. If he had an actual education, his article would be well written and he would understand the epidemic that is homelessness. Stereotypes aren't nice, are they? Grow up!

If America simply added a Homeless Tax to alcoholic beverages, homelessness in America would be solved in a few years. And the alcoholics you complain about would be paying taxes toward their own welfare. Problem solved.

The biggest problem with people's perceptions of the homeless is stereotypes; MANY of the people begging for money on the streets, for example, are NOT homeless. Many are though. I am sitting in Starbucks on my macbook, and NO ONE would think I am homeless, therefore all the interactions I have with people will NOT affect how they see the homeless, because they will NEVER know I am homeless.
I refuse to go to a shelter, because I don't want my stuff to get stolen or end up with Tuberculosis or something.
There is NO reason for anyone to beg on the streets because there are so MANY places to get free food.
As for people saying "anyone" can end up homeless, that is a LIE. It can't just happen to anyone because most people have a backup of some kind. If my mom weren't dead, I would be staying with her instead.
The homeless who are mentally or physically ill, it truly is not their fault. I mean legit mental illness, not alcohol/drug induced psychosis. Those people, at most, end up be

I work 3 jobs and I am homeless not buy choice. I don't do drugs nor do I drink. I have a college degree and I am underemployed. If you think I like to be homeless your nuts. The idiot landlord lost his house in foreclosure. The rents in my area are so high I can't afford to rent somewhere else. There have been studies done on an increase of homelessness due to foreclosures. There are more families than ever out on the streets. It is a good thing more people do not think like you do. Your too sure in your own lifestyle to realize it could happen to anyone and most people are a paycheck away from being where I am. I know of no one who is homeless crazy and addicted to drugs even like to be where they are at. I have met them. If they are crazy do you know why some of them are Vets when they come back from the wars we left them their. Mental illness should not be left untreated to leave them running around why well your mental hospitals did this because people didn't want

... hard-earned taxes go towards food and shelter for the homeless, or the park they sleep in, instead of going towards the schools for our own kids or other facilities that actually benefit people who have a job and contribute to society?
