Companies are mad at downloader's but if they did not have inside men and women giving these items to unscrupulous characters probably for money, then they would not be out there to begin with. Gone are the days of Napster when a simple lawsuit could have a file sharing program shut down. P2P file sharing such as bit torrents are hard to stop because websites continue to pop up offering seeds for people to download and share. File sharing programs that now appear are no longer centralized which is the reason they are hard to shut down. Not centralized means that there is not one location that authorities can go to and shut down the file sharing.
I believe that the problem goes deeper than file sharing because regular people are not breaking into record studios to steal unreleased music. There are a lot of hands in the pot when it comes to creating movies and music and obviously not everyone is trustworthy. Somewhere along the line there are people who are taking albums and releasing them online before the official release.
A few years ago the movie Swordfish starring John Travolta, Hugh Jackman, and Halle Berry was released online months before it was to be released in theatres. Security is not as secure as it should be unreleased productions and while it is a companies choice to go after those who illegally download films or CD's why are they not going after the people who may have released them?
Every few months you hear of another person overseas who had the police break down their doors and confiscate their entire computer and hardware but I don't believe I have ever heard of studio employees being hauled away in cuffs because they were found to have stolen unreleased media.
It is not rare to hear of an artist who's CD has been uploaded almost a year before its release date and usually there is an interview by the artist or music company upset about what happened and asking fans not to download it or to pay for the actual album when it is released. Some artists put out their albums earlier than they were supposed to because to do anything would mean that they would end up losing millions when the album finally debuted.
It is doubtful that online illegal downloading will ever be stopped as long as there is an internet but media companies will always hold the short end of the stick unless they find and stop the people who are stealing the unreleased media and also find a way to keep their media locked up and safe.
