The man casually referred to as Dr. Phil is certainly qualified to advise people on the issues affecting their lives, ranging from the trivial to the most critical. He has a B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in clinical psychology, and has worked as a professional psychologist for many years. But probably unlike many of his colleagues, Dr. Phil has the added components of charisma, humor and a down-to-earth approach to counseling. He strives to provide people with the "tools" and "skills" they need in order to manage life's problems. These tools are valuable, yet practical, which is why so many are able to actually apply what he teaches. Not only does he offer some of the most profound advice, his theories just make sense.
Dr. Phil's television show began airing on CBS in September 2002, and drew the highest ratings for a new syndicated show since the debut of The Oprah Winfrey Show back in 1986. Prior to launching his own show, he had been a regular guest on Oprah's show where audience members could "ask Dr. Phil" his opinion and advice on a wide array of subjects. This really helped give him the exposure he needed to be such a ratings success.
Today The Dr. Phil Show is in its fifth season, and we've seen the doctor do everything from rescue and detoxify heroine-addicted twins who were living on the street, to organize a sting operation in order to shut down a scam being perpetrated on his viewers.
He has helped improve the lives of thousands of people on his show alone, in addition to the millions watching at home and reading his books.
Being one of the most sought-after public speakers, Dr. Phil is a natural at motivational speaking. He can grab and hold an audience's attention because he really is that interesting, and people actually care what he has to say. It seems no matter what the issue, people are eager for him to weigh in.
His status allowed him to garner the support and resources to help many families affected by hurricane Katrina. He has done this for countless people in need, getting their stories out to corporations and organizations that are always willing to rally behind him in his quest to help those who need it. That is having influence.
This year alone the doctor has tackled some guests with pretty severe strongholds. His new addition this season, The Dr. Phil House, has made for some of the most intense moments of programming. He brought several extremely hate-filled and bitter people together in that house and worked with them until they were able to re-examine and change their ways of thinking. How many others can be credited with such influence? Not many.
Also this year, Dr. Phil and his wife, Robin announced the birth of the Dr. Phil Foundation. This is a nonprofit charitable organization that helps children and families at risk. It also has been used to reward remarkable children who have worked hard to overcome obstacles. Dr. Phil's belief that "everybody should have the opportunity to do and be everything they can be" is the driving force behind his generosity and tireless efforts with his charities.
Dr. Phil and Robin also recently joined the U.S Marine Corps Reserves in the 59th annual Toys for Tots holiday campaign, and have been named national spokespersons for the not-for-profit charity. They have taken this job seriously, and have made several toy collection events big successes.
Whether or not you like or agree with Dr. Phil, it's hard to ignore his tremendous influence on the present American culture.

Post a CommentTHANK YOU. I needed this article. I just read an article someone wrote that Dr. Phil Sucked. I was so pissed off. I'm a retired counselor, and Dr.Phil is tops on my list. So thanks for saying everything I feel about my Dr. Phil!
Maybe if I'd gotten a free car from her, I'd say otherwise! :)
Nice work, I like Dr. Phil, but as for Influential Person of the Year 2006, I think Oprah should be the one. A women who gives everyone in her audience a free car, come on people? You would not vote for her? Yes, you would.
Very well done article. :)
I'm not as much of a fan Dr. Phil as I used to be but I enjoyed the article. Nice work.
very good sound article, and I too am a fan of dr. Phil, a little unsure about the dramatic, house of hate,a little too sensationalistic, I think . you did very good
Wow. Thanks, AC for the typos. I really do use the space bar when I type, in case anyone was wondering.
