Why Do Earthworms Come Out in the Rain?

Earthworms--those little slimy critters slithering all over the phone--surface during heavy or prolonged rain due to the overabundance of moisture in the soil.

Although earthworms require damp environments for gas dispersion across their membrane, they (like humans) can only handle so much water at once.

Keep in mind though that certain species of earthworms can in fact survive being stranded in watered-down soil for an extended period of time--most though, cannot.
