Why Eating Less Meat Could Cut Global Warming

Why eating less meat could drop global warming- reveals a new report warning that livestock industry yields 8 per cent of all UK greenhouse gas emissions-yet eating some meat is good for the planet. The report claims that vegetarian diet would possibly not visibly reduce carbon emissions. Tara Garnett, from the Food Climate Research Network at Surrey University, said: "A little bit of livestock production is probably a good thing for the environment".

A fresh campaign urging people to eat less meat will be launched next year by an animal welfare group, Compassion in World Farming. Joyce D'Silva, Compassion's ambassador, said "All the different strands are building up: lots more information on diet, lots more information on livestock production, and the climate statistics... so we're making a strong case for reducing meat production and consumption".

The environmental benefits of eating less or no meat have been suggested for years by Vegetarians and some environmentalists. The Meat and Livestock Commission observed there could be different ways to decrease the carbon footprint of meat eating, including using more UK-produced food which did not have to be carried as far and altering the diet of cows, which could decrease methane output by half.

Eating less meat alone would not be enough for many people. "For a well-off professional with above average disposable income, no amount of vegetarian or vegan eating, recycling, organic local produce or packaging avoidance will make any shrinkage of our shadow. Flying time, petrol spend and energy bills will predominate", cautioned Hampton.

Though it is also true that not everybody can be convinced with this theory, as livestock is one of the oldest profession in the world. In fact, I was asked this question that it is so and there was no problem with it earlier. This is where we can clearly see the impact of Kali Age--the Iron age--where man has forgotten the benefits of livestock, but relish the meat that comes from killing them.

It is not only meat that we get from livestock--in olden times, our main focus was on milk, wool, labour-work, and similar tasks that were performed by cattle. However, in the modern world, the main focus of keeping the livestock has changed to meat market, which is sold world-wide. So, this is really going to be dangerous. There are huge water crisis due to this industry and it is shocking and revealing to read that around 50% of water consumption of whole of US goes to this industry.
