While it seems logical to do out in the wild, many don't consider doing the same thing while at home. It's always assumed that modern life will be like it always is having supplies, resources, and water available at all times just down the street at the store. There are situations like weather related disasters and other emergency situations that can occur. These are rare in modern day society, but they could happen at any time.
One thing that can be done to prepare for these situations is to have an emergency preparedness bag. At times these are also referred to as 72 hour kits and bug out bags. These include everything that you might need to survive for a few days. It's something that is already packed that can be grabbed quickly.
What can go into this bag?
Include anything that you might need for about three days. This would include clothing, toiletries, medicine, water, food, survival supplies, contact information, and sleeping equipment. You can pack more than three days worth of supplies if it fits. Just be sure that you can carry this bag without a vehicle. A family will have to have more than just one bag since there are more people involved. If using more than one bag, consider storing one inside one of the vehicles.
What situations will one realistically use this bag?
A very practical example is a house fire. The bag is within reach when you escape the flames. Even if you lose your home, you have basic supplies. This bag will be comforting in a difficult situation.
In a hurricane situation where you might have to leave the city in a hurry, these bags can be grabbed and depended upon while you get out of town. You will already be packed and ready to go as soon as you hear there is a problem. This will help you beat the traffic and prevent the issue of being stuck in traffic and potentially running out of gas while leaving.
No one knows what situations that will happen that could put society into a survival type situation. These bags are just the first step to being prepared.
