Why Employers Should Mandate Pre-Employment Drug Tests

If you have been on a job search recently, you may have noticed that many employers now require that you take a pre-employment drug test. You have to pass the drug test in order to acquire the job that you are seeking. Many people think that this is an unnecessary step for an employer to take. However, the employer doesn't see it the same way.

The importance of pre-employment drug test to the employer:

Character of Potential Employee- Getting a pre-employment drug screening on potential employees gives you a better idea of that person's overall character. If there is any hesitation when the potential employee is asked to take a drug screening, you may have just saved yourself the trouble of having an employee that could potentially have a bad character.

Safety of all Employees- Pre-employment drug screening helps keep the employees already in your charge safer. Although there is potential that an employee passes a drug test before being employed even if they do some type of illegal drugs, this weeds out the diehard drug users to keep employees safe. Using drugs of any sort while working places a potential hazard on everyone around you. Employers are wise to eliminate potential employees based on a drug test.

Saves Money- In the long run, employers can save a lot of money by doing pre-employment drug tests on potential employees. It saves them from having to pay for training employees who will possibly quit their job before training is even done. It also saves money for the employer later on in trying to rehabilitate drug induced employees by such measures as counseling. Employers save money on equipment or products that could get destroyed much easier because an employee is using drugs. Injuries often occur as a result of drug use and lawsuit can soon follow. All of these things are avoided when the employer requires a drug screening before hiring an employee.

Illegal Activity- There is a risk that employees run when they don't give pre-employment drug tests to potential employees. The risk is that employees who engage in illegal drug use have the potential of bringing those illegal drugs onto company property. This could cause major problems for the employer with law enforcement. It is very beneficial for employers to do pre-employment drug screening to avoid the possibilities of legal problems down the road.

Pre-employment drug screenings are being done by more and more employers as they realize the many benefits that it has to it's workplace. Potential employees should be free of illegal drugs to keep all employees safe in the workplace as well as saving the employer a lot of time and money. If your company isn't yet taking pre-employment drug screening tests, it might be time to implement them.
