I believe that we all have a gift. A special talent that we do best and love doing. Many people have many talents and they found them early in life. As a parent, you should help your child find their inner strength and their talent. What they love and what they do best. What makes them happy. Here is why.
A child will usually exhibit special talents early in life. Their unique talent. It can be speaking in public, acting, drawing, tumbling, reading, music, singing or writing. They may have incredible balance and can walk early. They may express an interest in dancing or running. As a parent, it is very important to notice early on what your child does best and what activities make them the happiest. They may take to the water like a duck and swim circles around their friends. This is a sign. You need to see it.
Children who can express and develop their natural born talents are more confident. They learn that they can do something that not all people can do. This is not only a valuable learning experience, it is also character building. They achieve rewards and joy from doing what they are good at. For girls, it may be dance class, ballet, tumbling, tap dancing, twirling or competing in beauty pageants. It may also be gymnastics or sports. For the boys, sports are often discovered at an early age. While football, soccer, softball, tennis, basketball, swimming and running are all fine sports, do make certain that the child wants to participate, before forcing a sport that you may love on them. A family legacy of great football players may be in the family, but your son may not be talented in that area. Keep an open mind when encouraging your child and let them make the final choice.
To find your child's special gift or talent, be observant. It may be math, science, insects, cars, dolls, fashion, puzzles, books, but whatever it is, you will see an expression of pure delight on your child's face, while they enjoy this subject. Many children are very gifted at computer skills and this is also a good thing. While video games may not thrill you, a future in designing or testing video or computer games may be in your child's future. A child who loves to read, be read to, may be a writer or teacher in the making. The kids that like science may be doctors, nurses or scientists. Encouraging whatever your child loves to do can bring many future opportunities their way.
When a child expresses an interest in music, dance, horses, dogs, sports or science, that is a pathway for you to head them on the right track. Their interests may change and you must change with them. Art may be their passion in early childhood, but they may lose interest and go on to another subject. Let them. It is all a learning and growing experience. Encouraging your child's talents and helping them find them may see like a daunting path and it is. But, the future rewards are worth it. Have a lot of patience and stand back. You child will grow, learn and develop their talents. The more, the merrier, I say.
Finding the best things your child can do is the most rewarding part of being a parent. Encouraging reading, writing and social skills all help your child on the way to being a future doctor, vet, dancer, artist, writer, teacher, computer tech or healthcare worker. Letting them know that good grades are a talent, too, doesn't hurt. Honor students, Beta club, band, sports, cheerleading, all are excellent tools to add to their future. And don't forget the chess club, french club, FFA, all of which are admirable clubs. In rural areas, farming may be what your child is headed for and there is nothing wrong with hog raising, chicken raising, crop and plant growing and learning about agriculture. The key is finding what your child loves and letting them do it. Only then, will they know their real potential and ability to excel and succeed. And you will be there, all the way, encouraging and cheering.
