Why I Feel Don Imus Should Stay on Air

The Right to Free Speech is Every American's Right, Not Just a Choice Few

Stacy Fisher
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
- The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution

It seems to me if all our rights are being completely stripped right in front of us.

No matter how distasteful it was for Don Imus to say what he did, he had every right to speak his mind ON HIS OWN SHOW...Carlos Mencia does it...South Park does it...Heck, even those Sunday morning preachers do it! Why is it that some people can get away with putting other people down, putting races down, putting women down, or pushing their Biblical philosophy on us?

I will tell you why... The first amendment!

Carlos Mencia says what he says because he knows that as long as he is in America, he has certain rights. He can put down his own race and all others because he knows he will get big laughs out of it from other people who look at the humorous side of all races. South Park will never change because if they get sued for something libel, that the first amendment will back them up. What Imus said is no different than what they say on a weekly basis.

So, do you want to know why what Imus said is such a big deal? Because most Americans are so sue happy and immature that they let the least little comment turn into a lawsuit or they let depression sink in to them to the point of medications and/or suicide.

One of the Rutgers women basketball team members stated that she is scarred for life...Why? Is that the first time someone called her a name???? Oh my! She needs to bury her head in the sand and wait for the end of the world!!! Or she can GROW UP!

The only time a name hurts is when you think their is truth to it. If they let it hurt them, they must think in some minute way they are what Imus said they were.

Since the age of 8, I never fit in with school kids, college kids and such, and I had my share of names thrown at me, because I think a bit different from everyone else... I see both sides of a situation. This is a double edged sword because you have both sides hating you for they way you think, and they almost always think you are taking the other side. You always have both sides coming to you saying "How could you see their side?"

I did something these Rutgers girls now need to do: I let myself grow from the ignorance of others, and now I am a writer, and an aspiring author. I took the power away from them, and now those who did what they did either are going nowhere, or they past away at a very untimely age.

I must say this...Don Imus said what he said, and it can't be taken back. I wouldn't have said what he said because I am mature and I have faults myself. He apologized, he seen the error of his way. Let's stop blowing up a situation that is done with. It is now up to the Rutgers women's basketball team to now accept what he said, and be mature and accept the apology. These women are wonderful, intelligent young adults. I have my faith that they will not let this undermine their successes.

After all was said and done, Don Imus had his show removed from MSNBC. What other rights will be taken from us? Only time will tell.

I tend to agree with you. I think ignorant opinions should never be squashed, if only to teach others that having ignorant opinions is well... ignorant.

If you watch the actual videotape of Don Imus, available at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=RF9BjB7Bzr0 you will see the viciousness
of his comments, and if you go to wilkipedia and type in his
name, you will see that he has degraded women, gay people, and
    Jewish people as well.

Saying that someone needs to grow up and get over it is like
basically telling someone whose been violated that its really
their fault not for being able to take it. I'm shocked and
appalled that as a woman you are okay with these SEXIST comments!

You are right that first amendment allows freedom of speech but
if he had been broadcasting his show live in a park in the middle
of an inner-city neighborhood, would he still have made those
    same remarks?

the 1st amendment and "freedom of speech" only applies to GOVERNMENT actions restricting speech or expression.

  • CAbruiser4/20/2007

You are correct, but his employers have the same right to fire him.

Wow I agree with you on some of this but mainly that it's everyone's right to say what they want. Freedom of speech is being taking away from us all. Great article.
