Filters are very important because they remove harmful elements in the water. The carbon which is located in the filter cartridges will actually hold the harmful elements to the carbon. This means that the carbon is the main purpose for having a filter system. Some filter cartridges will not come with carbon and you must purchase it separately. This means that you must fill the carbon bag up with carbon and place it in your filter system. Without carbon, your filter is pretty much useless.
You will need to change the carbon, which looks like little black rocks. You will do this by simply throwing your filter cartridges away, or purchasing new carbon to go inside of the cartridge, depending on what type of filter system that you have purchased.
If you place your cartridge into the water and you see that there is what looks like dust, this is actually steam. It means that you have carbon that is going to work and it's better than your average carbon. Before you place the carbon and cartridge into your filter you will need to rinse it off quickly with cold water.
You will need to replace your filter cartridges every time that you need to do a water change. This will make sure that the harmful elements in your water are being eliminated. Without a new filter cartridge you will see the water start to get cloudy. This is because you need to change the filter cartridge. After a certain amount of time the carbon will hold as much as it possibly can.
Then all the harmful elements will start to flow back into your water. It's very important to purchase a filter system and filter cartridges for your filter. You can purchase filters from any local pet store. Make sure you know how big your tank is so that you purchase a filter which is capable of cleaning your entire fish tank.
