Why Do I Forget Things and How Can I Remember Better?

Strategies for a Better Memory

Yvonne M. Glasgow, Ph.D.
Forgetting where your keys are or where you put your favorite necklace? You are not the only person who has ever suffered from some sort of memory loss. It doesn't even matter your age, young and old, alike, forget things. Sometimes this can be caused by a medical condition, like dementia or Alzheimer's, but it is not always something so serious. AND, it is something you can fix on your own, if it isn't caused by some serious condition! Our minds need fitness, just like our bodies do. Why our minds get out of shape and how to get them fit again is explained further below.

What gives you a bad memory?
Stress can be a huge cause of memory loss. When we are stressed our minds and bodies are not working to their full potential. This lack of potential can lead to forgetfulness. By finding things to do that make you feel calm and relaxed, like meditation and yoga, you can learn to be less stressed and your memory will thank you for it. Not fighting off your stress can lead to more serious things.

Lack of sleep is another thing that can affect your memory. When you are sleep deprived it is hard to concentrate and thus it is hard to remember things. Getting 7 to 9 hours of sleep at night is a great help in making sure your body has the rest that it needs. Going to bed at the same time each night, as well as waking up at the same time can help too. Making sure that you have a comfortable mattress and pillows can make a huge difference in your quality of sleep too.

Even doing too much multitasking can lead to memory loss. Do only one or two things at a time, but not more. This will help to make sure that you are not missing tasks as you go along through your day. Our minds are not built to be thinking of so many different things all at one time and they can get confused when doing too much at once. Just take it one step at a time and your mind will thank you by storing more information.

How can you get my memory back?
One great way to help your mind is by fitting fitness into each day. Fitness keeps our bodies going and keeps our minds working. Think fit and get fit, because fitness is for your mind too, not just your body. Working out gets the endorphins going, which can perk out brains up!

Do projects that make you think, like crossword puzzles. Things that challenge our minds help them to contain and use more information. Just sitting and staring at the television does not cut it, that only makes our brains not need to work. Even playing a board game like scrabble can get your thinker thinking. Even math problems (as much as most of us dread that subject) can really get the mind working).

Diet also helps. Eating foods rich in Omega 3's, like some vegetables and fish, can help the brain develop better memory skills (and they are also heart healthy foods). Work fish into your diet at least once or twice a week. Get at least 3 to 5 servings of both fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. Food is great for the body and for the mind.

Last, but not least, take it easy. There's no need to rush, stop and think. Use it or lose it works with our brains too, you know!
