1. Free Movies - Forget Blockbuster. Local libraries offer free DVD rentals, and they're not just old movies. Here are some of the movies available at my local library:
Syriana
Bedtime Stories
National Treasure
Gladiator
Where the Wild Things Are
2. Free Music - You can borrow all kinds of CDs and listen to new music. They have everything from Jazz to Country to Christmas music.
3. Audio Books - Audio Books are expensive to purchase. They are so nice to listen to while you're commuting or traveling. Go borrow some from your local library before your next road trip.
4. Children's Story Time - If you have children, check out your library's story time. Some libraries offer puppet shows, children's music and crafts. This is a great way to meet other parents. It's basically a free playdate. Which brings me to #5.
5. Community - Your local library is a great way to get to know your community and neighbors. Libraries often advertise things like scout meetings, adult classes, and community events. Libraries are also polling places in many cities. Your library is a great place to get involved.
6. Craft and Decorating Books - I taught myself to knit by reading books I checked out from the library. There's no need to buy home decorating books when you can borrow them. My library has lots of great holiday inspiration books and cook books, too. Visit your library's website and reserve copies before your next party.
7. Magazines and Periodicals - No need to buy subscriptions. Just grab a cup of coffee or a Diet Coke and head to your library. They have so many magazines. Check it out!
8. Book Sales - If you prefer to own books, libraries sometimes have book sales. You can find some great deals. Ask your librarian if your library has a book sale coming up.

This article is featured on AC Books home page. Well done, Ashley!
Alyce, I can't believe your library charges for media! That stinks. Thanks, Amy and RC.
Our library has many programs ~ recently saw the movie "The Soloist" being aired ~ for free ~ in conjunction with a program "Long Beach Reads One Book". And that was the book. Also, many discussion groups and meetings about homelessness during that week. I do love the library ~ in any town!
I do not borrow many movies from the local library ~ they charege for 'rentals' as much as it costs to rent at store and new releases have to be returned in two days. I have borrowed lots of CDs ~ they only charge 30 cents for them and allowed to be out for the usual 3 weeks.
Very nice remeinder ~ I used to visit the library everyday to use the Internet ~ and have not been in a month, since I got hooked up at home. But after reading a book a day for 2 or 3 years, a bit burned out with reading books.
Definitely gotta love the library! :) We shouldn't take our libraries for granted. Great article.
I don't need to be sold on libraries -- I worked in one as a clerk for several years. The services are totally awesome -- mostly free (some rentals on items for faster availability). Ours will be closed for a month, then will open in a brand new large building. What fun that will be! Good topic.
