Why Global Warming is Not a Hoax

Joe V.
Global is not a hoax. It is real. This is a fact. There is almost not a scientist on the planet who would say it isn't real. In fact the scientific community around the world is in unanimous agreement that human beings are adversely affecting our environment through our use of fossil fuels.

Yet despite the scientific communities opinion, the popular media still argues that there is doubt about global warming and that it is just a theory. This in turns puts doubt into the public about the validity of global warming. The problem with the media is not that they are reporting on climate change, which they should be, but that they are reporting incorrectly about it.

There are several arguments against the reality global warming that can easily be disproved.

1. The environment goes through cycles and this is just a normal cycle.

The first part of that statement is true, and the environment does go through heating and cooling cycles, and we are currently in the warm part of a cycle. One thing that is known is that the quantity of green house gases in the atmosphere over thousands of years has followed the trend of the planet temperature. Scientists have taken ice cores in the arctic and can analyze the different layers of ice, one formed each year, for tens of thousands of years to determine the temperature of that year, and the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that year. The problem is that over all the ice cores they have analyzed, the current trend since the start of the industrial revolution has increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to levels that are many times higher than there have ever been. We have no doubt that the increase will lead to higher temperatures and then to a cooling period, or ice age. The problem is not that this cycle is happening, because it would happen anyway, the problem is that we are accelerating it at a rate that we cannot measure.

2. If there is a problem, we will be able to clean it up.

There is no reason to believe that after we have passed some point of no return, that we will be able to clean up the environment. We are putting more green house gases into the atmosphere every year, and we need to slow this down before the atmosphere reaches a point where it cannot be removed through natural means anymore. The rate at which we are dumping them into the environment is slowing down, but we need to do more to start to reverse the human effect on the environment.

The bottom line is that climate change is a real phenomenon, and humans are having a greater effect on the Earth's climate than anything in the recent history of the Earth. We need to seriously change our ways if we intend to leave our children a world they can live in.
