Getting a library card is very simple. Typically, all you need to do is go to the library with your driver's license and electric bill (or other document that proves your address) and they will be able to set you up with one in a matter of minutes. Most libraries have switched over to an electronic system that makes the check out process very quick and painless. Our city does not have a very good library but this new computerized system they have developed allows all the libraries in the area to be connected in a way that allows patrons to take books out of any nearby library. I often go to a wealthy neighboring city to hang out and have dinner so this is a great time to pick up books that my home library does not have available. I can then return them back to the library in my city and they will ship them back where they belong for free. I find this process to be very convenient.
Another great thing is that I find myself reading books much faster because I know that they need to be returned in two weeks. Sometimes when I own the book, I take my time reading just because I can but the little added pressure is a great help to me. I find that I get through many more of the books that I am interested in reading this way.
I also enjoy the fact that when I am done with the books, they can go right back where they came from. There is no hassle of trying to sell the book or finding a place to store it in my tiny apartment. I have a hard time throwing away a perfectly good book that I have paid for and our library only accepts donations once a year so borrowing books from the library reduces the amount of clutter I have to store.
The library also allows me to expand the selection of books I would consider reading. I would never walk into a bookstore and buy a book that I hadn't heard or read good things about, but this is definitely a possibility at the library where there is no investment involved. There might also be some books there about local history that you may not have been able to find elsewhere.
Check out your local library for a great free way to entertain yourself. There will doubtlessly be numerous books there of interest to you that will keep your attention for hours in a way that is much better for your brain than watching television.
