Reasons that you should Google your children's names:
Behavior- If you Google your child's name, you will likely find out if they are behaving in a way appropriate for their age. Children will often get into things on the computer that they shouldn't be getting into. Googling a person's name can bring up some very interesting information on them. That means that you can find out what websites that your child may be on that you aren't aware of and give you the opportunity to check up on them to make sure that these are sites that your child should be on. For instance, you might find out that your child is on a chat site that you wouldn't approve of.
Identity Theft- Keeping a close eye on what comes up when you Google your child's name can help you pick out and identify cases that might allow for identity theft of your child's name. Even children are vulnerable to this and children aren't always as cautious as an adult might be when it comes to social networking and other areas of the internet. Children, especially teens aren't usually concerned with these types of things because they really don't think it will touch them. It is very possible for someone to steal their identity and use it for their own evil purposes.
Make your Child Aware- Google your child's name while your child is right there with you. Go over the findings to make your child aware of why some things are okay while others are not. Explain why the bad things are not alright, such as posting their phone number or address on the internet. Making your children more aware of why some things are a bad idea will help them learn to practice safe internet surfing throughout their life.
Curiosity- In this case, curiosity isn't going to kill the cat. Wanting to know what your children are up to is one of the first things that parents should have on their minds. You don't have to know everything your children are up to, but it does help keep on track with what might be problem areas. It might also tell you if the kids are doing even better than you thought they were doing.
You would be surprised at what you can find out about what kids are doing on the internet. The world is nothing like it used to be. Kids can find trouble more easily than they ever could before because of the internet. They don't always have to be looking for it either. Know what your children are doing on the internet. One of the best ways to find out is to Google their name along with the town and state that you live in. It can be incredibly revealing.
