Why Gunite is Advantageous in Swimming Pools

Bethany Greenleaf
Gunite, a mixture of cement and sand, can be used for many purposes. Shot Crete is one type of reinforced concrete that is strong and can be adapted to many unusual shapes. Swimming pools that are made with gunite can be formed in a variety of shapes and sizes. Swimming pools are great additions to a property. They provide warm weather entertainment and also add value to a home.

Constructing a pool made from gunite is done by first digging a hole. Next the plumbing is put into place, followed by the assembly of the framework grid with 3/8-inch rebar (reinforced steel rods). Rebar rods are secured with wire after being placed about 10-inches apart. With the grid in place the construction crew building the pool can then spray a heavy coating of gunite around the rebar. A sprayer unit produces a wet concrete material by combining a dry gunite mix with water just before spraying.

The crew uses trowels to smooth out the gunite then allows it to sit for a week before the rough surface is covered by a smooth finish. Plaster is the most popular finish. A lot of people also use concrete paint to finish their pools as well. One to three months may be needed to construct and install a concrete pool depending on the installer and weather conditions.

Gunite allows a homeowner to design any shape and size for their pool. Lending itself to custom pool design makes gunite the material of choice when constructing swimming pools for luxury homes. Gunite allows the most freedom with pool design giving the pool a more natural look. Florida beaches and mountain lakes are only two examples of what a gunite pool can be designed to look like. Entries can be made to look like a sandy ocean beach and vanishing edges give the appearance of dropping into nothing. The appearance of a lake or creek can be obtained by using pebble finishes. These examples are only a few samples of the various options available when using gunite as the building material of a pool.

Custom pools made out of gunite may cost more and take more time to install, however; these pools are more personal allowing the homeowner almost unlimited design and shape possibilities making them worth the added time and money. Gunite pools can have a variety of finishes such as plaster, tile, fiberglass, or even exposed aggregate. Homeowners can design a pool that reflects their personality and is extremely durable. Pools made of gunite can be constructed in many different shapes and sizes giving complete design freedom. Gunite pools last for very long periods of time, although plaster finishes made need replacing every 10-15 years, and are a valuable addition to any property.

Choosing to install a swimming pool adds value and beauty to any property. Using gunite as the construction medium is worth the extra money and time, giving the homeowner a world of possibilities.
