Why Hapuna Should Be Voted America's Best Beach

Dr. Beach should check his own pulse after leaving out one of the greatest beaches on the planet when he recently published his list of America's Best Beaches.

Hapuna, located just before mile post #69 on the west side of Hawaii's Big Island, has seen its fair share of media coverage in the past, so perhaps it's no surprise that this year it was bumped for a new spot. But just because it doesn't have the sex appeal of Maui or even Waikiki, doesn't mean it needs to be usurped by a fellow sandy shore.

This is a public beach, although the north end is usually reserved with fold-out chairs for hotel folk that come to stay in the Hilton's Prince Hotel (for over $400 a night). Parking is free, but during the hot season when tourism is rampant, it can be tough to find a spot unless you grab one early.

The south end features a host of picnic benches and an ice cream shop for the young at heart (or, you know, age). Feel free to bring your beach toys, as the half-mile expanse leaves room for plenty to play. Beware the stray cats here, however, for even though rabies does not exist in the islands, there are a host of kitty diseases you might not want to catch if they bite the hand that tries to feed them.

And if you're a fan of escaping the sun while taking your beauty roast, remember to bring an umbrella, as shady spots are limited.

On your way down to this beach, coming from the north, you'll pass by the site of Kevin Costner's multimillion dollar flop, Waterworld, and wonder how this place sprawling with thick grooves of untamed lava can possibly cater to the beach-hungry hunter. Nevertheless, the nearly sugar-white sand beckons from the black wasteland, and coalesces into a starkly contrasting landscape.

So it's not the Caribbean. The water doesn't have the oo-lala 'I can see the center of the earth' clarity. But it's so close you might not notice it. This is because in Hawaii, there is a special feature we like to call actual waves. Waves you can body board or bodysurf on (don't bring a surfboard here, though, they're not allowed and there are several much better spots on the island), and water clear enough for you to wonder if you really even need a snorkel - until you open your eyes underwater and unsuccessfully try to rub away the salt spots you see for the rest of the afternoon.

Events can be scheduled at the Prince Hotel (http://www.princeresortshawaii.com/hapuna-beach-wedding-venues.php), which features an 8,000 foot courtyard, a skyline terrace, and a heated pool. You can also mosey down to Hapuna's world-class golf course designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay after you wind down with your salty seaside siesta.

After visiting, there's no need to check your pulse. You'll know how to truly live, and what America's Best Beach should be.
