The first time my naval was pierced, I did it myself, I was much younger then. That I say would be mistake number one, you should see a professional piercer with the proper tools before you have any type of piercing modification done. My second mistake was the choice of pants for that evening. While getting ready for a party I was changing my outfit and when I went to remove my pants the jewelry got stuck and ripped out. After quite a few screams and a lot of swearing I put a bandage on my "stupid wound" and went on my way.
Some time down the road I got the piercing itch again. Again this time I did it myself. You would be surprised what kind of courage baby teething gel and ice will give you. This time my downfall was not placing it deep enough and my body rejected the piercing. If you have never had it happen before, believe me you will know it when it does. The body slowly pushed the jewelry out of your skin over time. This adventure left me with another small scar.
Quite a few years went by before I had the gumption to give it another shot. This time I went to a professional, they did however have some problems because of the scar tissue from my previous attempts. I cleaned it and cared for it as instructed but alas, it was not meant to be. This one also rejected, and got infected which was really gross and quite painful. I had a huge scar from this.
I did find some products at my local drug store that helped with the scaring, but I will never get that particular piercing again. For some body types it is really uncomfortable depending on depth, regular pant style (you can't wear hip huggers all the time) and other factors such as metal allergy etc... You can also develop keloids.
In my opinion if you are going to do it, get it done professionally, take proper care of it, and watch out for snags. It looks really cute in a bikini, but if it rejects or rips out you could end up with permanent scarring. I love body art, tattoos and piercings; I think that is why I tried three times. Be creative and express yourself, just be careful and seek professional guidance, it can save you from a lot of pain, scarring, and aggravation later.
