Why I Hate Celebrity Gossip

Steve Thompson
I don't watch the news anymore, and there are at least six newspapers piled on my front porch, unread and prepared for the recycling bin. When I listen to the radio, I turn it to an all-music station, forsaking the talk radio I once enjoyed. Why have I made a recluse of myself? you ask. Simple: because I hate celebrity gossip.

It seems you can't walk to the grocery store without hearing about Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan, and through no fault of my own, I know that "TomKat's" child is named Suri. I come across these tidbits of information without seeking them out, and each time someone mentions a celebrity's name, I get a little weak in the stomach. I enjoy television and movies and music as much as the next person, but I often find the characters they play more charming than the person behind the screen. Am I the only one?

I learned the other day (quite late, I might add) that Paris Hilton published a book, co-written with another author, in 2004. The book made it to the New York Time's bestseller list, and I don't think I'm alone when I say that this might be the end of humanity as we know it. If Paris Hilton can score a publishing contract - regardless of how many ghostwriters she hired - I think it's safe to assume that literary standards have gone down the proverbial toilet.

Things like this disturb me, but what bothers me even more is the insatiable greed with which many people devour celebrity gossip. They feed on it, almost as though it gives them sustenance, and I'm greatly concerned that our society has become dependent on knowing whether or not Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton have become friends again. It seems we are more concerned with what celebrities are doing with their endless wealth than what our own family members are doing on the other side of the country.

Furthermore, I can't help but think that there are more important issues toward which we should be directing our interest and using our resources. How many magazine pages are wasted with full-color photos of various celebrities, and how much bandwidth is wasted on a daily basis by incessant ramblings of celebrity groupies? I don't know for certain, but I would imagine that more people search the Google archives for "Britney Spears" and "Lindsay Lohan" than "feed the homeless" and "cure breast cancer".

This doesn't mean that I search for those keywords on a regular basis, nor do I mistakenly believe that my passion for old Western movies is more important than world hunger. However, celebrity gossip gets under my skin far more often than the other vacuous habits we humans develop.

Do you love celebrity gossip? Hate it? Do you take long lunches from work when you know that the latest issue of People will hit the newstands? I would love to know how many people actually find celebrity gossip entertaining, and how many simply find the obsession with it laughable.

This is why I bury myself in simple mundane tasks. There seems to be nothing but crap on the news, which really isn't news to begin with. The problems in Africa are more news worthy than celebrity gossip. It's also depressing to know that Paris Hilton published a book that for some reason is popular. Can she even read? The novel I submitted last November would probably be a better read than her's, as well as the other novel ideas I have.

I would rather hear some news about what is happening in Europe ,Asia and other parts of the world than hear about Jennifer Lopez butt surgery or Paris Hiltons chihauhau . Network news ignores the rest of the world and gives us endless redundant information about political hacks who increasingly resemble the Hollywood nitwits that you and I abhor. I rarely watch the network programming because it insults the intelligence of a flea (sorry fleas). I think there is hope for America as long as we can deflect the ignorance grenades being hurled at us from every direction of our ailing society.Celebrities is that an accurate description ? The word needs to be retired because increasingly it is being applied to people with no discernible talent or skill other than publicists who are adept at media manipulation.

    I Agree with you!!

  • I propose No Celebrity Day1/13/2011

So far no one had the idea that we need No Celebrity Day so one day a year without celebrity news and gossip. There's nothing we need more then such a day. It would be nice to relax from the pseudo-information, and also it would be a good occasion to restore the proportions between the important news and all that crap about celebrities. So look for No Celebrity Day on facebook.

I couldn't agree more-I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels the way you do. They are worshipped like gods in this society, which is quite pathetic, and speaks volumes about how collectively stupid we as american society have become!

I completely agree that our society has a over emphasis on celebrities. Every-time I even look at a celeb gossip mag at the store, I question if our population is getting more and more retarded. Who the hell cares if someone has someone else's lovechild. Personally I think that channels like E! should be canceled because who would want to waste brain cells watching that pig-shit?

I am with all you guys down there and I also hate all things celebrity!!!!!
I do love Johnny Depp but I still wouldn't buy a gossip mag if he was in it, he is a nice guy and keeps himself relatively to himself.
It's the media hungry numpties that get on my nerves and our kids think they are great....?????
Right.........where are my blood pressure pills!!!

I despise celebrity gossip has convinced me to act! I'm going to write my own article for our High School's paper about how this bullshit is, like DRUGS, just a way for people to not have to focus on their own lives. I hope you don't mind If I cite this article of yours!

Oh thank God, I've finally found more sane people. Honestly, if the majority of these people put even a fraction of the attention they put into stalking celebrities into working on their family relationships, their would be no disfunction we hear about all the time. I am seriously concerned and equal parts infuriated to see what the world is coming to. Would you rather support a world hunger program, or take careful note of whenever Brad Pit takes a shit?

It is pretty sad that we resort to following the lives of these people. I actually find it quite odd. It is strange that people are able to make a living talking about celebreties, even the ones who make fun of them. WHO CARES??? Why we don't put our interests into people who will actually help our society, instead of being obsessed with lifestyles that are excessive and lazy. These people get paid for entertaining, looking nice, etc. ... yet there are so many hardworking people who get paid relatively nothing (teachers, scientists, etc.). For the most part I like to stay out of it and know as little as possible, but I can;t help expressing my disgust with celebrities and their gossip.
