Why I Highly Recommend Hickies Hamburger Inn Portsmouth, Ohio
A Classic Diner at Home in the 21st Century
If you are traveling through Portsmouth, Ohio, and have a few minutes to spare I highly recommend this restaurant. If you are looking for quiet dining this is not the place to visit. Hickies is loud and family oriented. From the moment you walk into this small establishment you will feel warm. The smell of burgers cooking on the grill and the plastic tables and booth remind you of going back in time. Back in time before fast food restaurants were on every corner.
Hickies has an old diner feel complete with barstools at the counter. Customers order from the menu that is hanging on the wall. One of those menu boards where the letters pop into the slats. The prices on the menu are exceptional for the quality of food you receive and better yet these prices have not gone up in years. Menu selections include cheeseburgers, hamburgers (about the size of a white castle burger), hot dogs, fries with gravy, barbecue and slaw, brown beans, and many other items of a similar nature. The specialty of Hickies Hamburger Inn is a burger known as the Yogi. This burger is traditional size with an ingredient I would not expect to find on a burger, cole slaw.
The wait staff is comprised of mostly ladies who have been working there for years. Customers know them by name and they in turn know the names of their loyal patrons. Working mostly for tips these ladies provide excellent customer service. Orders are brought to your table mostly on paper plates and drinks are placed in paper cups and place mats are like pieces of wax paper. There is noting fancy about this place but it's well worth your time and money to stop in for a Yogi and a soda. Be prepared to wait for a parking spot or even possibly a seat. Space is limited and locals love this place.
Hickies Hamburger Inn has been serving the Portsmouth Ohio area for several decades but unless you are a native of Portsmouth you probably have never heard of it. It's easy to miss as your drive through New Boston so keep your eyes out. Hickies is situated on a corner lot on Rhodes Avenue (Rt 52 East). In my opinion this restaurant is a classic piece of history that still has a place in the 21st century.
