Why Homemade Cooking? Benefits of Cooking from Scratch

It's Never Too Late to Learn How to Cook from Scratch

What's cooking from scratch mean?

Cooking from scratch is an old term used for homemade cooking. If you cook from scratch its a pretty good bet that you are not using prepared meals from the grocery shelf. Do people still cook homemade meals? Yes. I see a trend towards more people wanting to make their family homemade meals and desserts.

Benefits of homemade cooking.

The greatest benefit to homemade cooking is knowing exactly what your family is eating. When you cook from scratch you are avoiding the prepackaged meals that very often contain many additives and preservatives to keep that package on the shelf. If a family member is allergic to something, you have a better chance to control what they eat if you are putting their meals together by scratch.

Homemade cooking can eliminate many chemicals and additives that your family consumes. Want macaroni and cheese? Try buying a package of noodles (or making your own) and make the mac and cheese with milk, butter and a healthy cheese. YOU pick what goes into your food.

The downside to cooking from scratch.

Time. It takes a little more time to make your family's meals from scratch. But honestly, after you have cooked from scratch for a while, you will get quicker and not think anything of the time. You WILL be proud of yourself and how you are feeding the family.

For working women the key to homemade meals is in the planning. Planning meals ahead for a week really does help. When you go to the grocery store, buy foods with meals for each day in mind. Try making things like burritos ahead and freezing them for meals when your time is short. It's still a healthy homemade meal and doesn't take more than 30 minutes to bake.

The upside to homemade cooking.

The homemade meals are healthier. That's what got me started and has kept me making homemade meals for so many years.

After your family eats your meals from scratch, they will notice when something comes from a box. Brownies are one such item. I can literally "taste" the chemicals in most brownies from a box. My family can tell the difference now too and prefer the homemade brownies.

If you have family members that are plagued by headaches/migraines you may be surprised at how fewer headaches they have after switching to a diet of homemade meals. You could find that you lose unwanted weight after switching to homemade meals. I did.

So don't be afraid to learn how to cook from scratch. Those homemade meals are worth it. Look on the Internet for help. If you want to make biscuits, just search for homemade biscuits or biscuits from scratch. Pass your new cooking skills down to your children. They will thank you for it when they become adults and have to take care of their own families.

You're right, Sherry. When I plan for the week cooking meals become a simple process for me. I never thought to link the reason for headaches might be the food we eat. Makes sense.
