Why Humanities Are Important ?

In order to understand why the humanities are important, you first have to understand what they are. After all, it is a little difficult to study something you have no understanding of, especially something so scholarly as humanities. Many people assume that this fancy word refers to something only Liberal Arts students need concern themselves with, but it is important for every single person in this society to understand what the humanities are all about.

The humanities are basically the study of human beings, what makes us human, and how we have developed along the timeline of history. They include a long list of academic pursuits, such as history, literature, art, historical sciences, law philosophy, and linguistics, among others. Each of these affects us as human beings and has had some effect on how the human race has been evolving over the past couple thousand years.

The study of humanities is quite important due to the fact that these disciplines affect us profoundly on every level. They define who we are and where we came from as well as help us decipher the answer to the age old question, "why are we here?"

In true academic sense, these academic studies force us to think critically about the challenges that face us as individual human beings as well as a society. They open up the floor to debate over why we hold certain values in our society and where those values came from. This is vital for anyone attempting to understand their own culture, let alone a foreign one.

Another use of the humanities is that they allow us to build upon what has already been established in previous generations and centuries. Everything we hold dear nowadays was built upon layer after layer of history and ethics that formed slowly over the years. We don't have to go back to square one, but rather, we are required to go forward with the learning and building on previous knowledge.

Humanities are also useful and important in that they allow us to look back at how previous generations and cultures managed the same issues that face us now. As they say, "everything that goes around comes around" and nothing is truer when you are studying humanities. The history of the world is captured in its art and its literature as well as the laws that we still obey to this day. The policies and ethics that we hold so dear were developed over time; they didn't simply exist from the beginning.

Therefore, it is extremely important to study humanities because it gives us a sense of belonging in a cold, empty universe. It also gives us a sense of where we came from, a feeling of history and groundedness, no matter what our background. And, quite simply, humanities blend us all together into one society that continues to grow and improve itself. Without the humanities, we would never advance at all, just stay in the same place, reinventing the wheel!
