Why Are You Impatient?

T. Ramaswamy
Jose and John are neighbors. They meet often and exchange greetings. One day Jose feels pressing need for some cash and approaches John. The conversation follows:
Jose: Good Morning John.
John Good Morning. What news you have brought for me? Any good news?
Jose: Yes.Really good news. My son has become a father.
John: Very good. Congratulations. You have now become grandfather.
Jose: Thanks, John. True. I need some cash badly.
John: Why? When your son becomes a father why do you need cash?
Jose: You see I have to buy a gift for the baby. I am short of cash. I need $200
John: I give it now. When will you return it?
Jose: In two months.
John eagerly waits for return of the cash after two months But Jose is out of sight. He avoids John. He does not answer his telephone calls. At last John sends a harsh message asking Jose to settle the dues immediately. He says twenty months have passed by against the promised two months, for payment.
Jose gathers courage to call back.
He replies.
John. Why are you so impatient? I will not run away with the cash. It is safe like a fixed deposit.
John: I have to learn patience from you. Are you not ashamed of yourself in talking about patience?
Jose: I am used to this habit. There are many friends who have lent me cash. But they never ask for return. They are gentlemen.. What can't you be like them and earn a good name?
John: I have lost the good name by coming to your help. They all blame me for giving cash to you without verifying your antecedents. Like adding insult to injury you now say: "why are you so impatient".

This is a common experience of many of us. Kindness getting exploited. But we make those decisions to help. We have to accept the consequence of our poor judgment! We have no choice - like the mumbaikars said about getting on with life with the 'mumbaikar spirit' after 26/11.
