Why it is Important to Start Early when Developing Healthy Eating in Children

Teaching your children healthy eating habits needs to start early and be part of an overall healthy lifestyle.

Learning healthy eating habits begins as soon as you start to introduce solid foods to your baby. It is much easier to start on the right track than to fix things later. Good eating habits learned at a young age will follow your child through the rest of their lives.

Start by introducing as wide a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low fat dairy products as possible. This will teach the child that healthy eating doesn't have to be boring. Remember that kids often don't like new tastes and so be patient and keep offering them the new item until they accept it.

Everything in moderation is a good way to describe the goal of healthy eating habits in children. Too much of any one food, no matter how healthy it is will not provide all of the nutrition needed for proper growth and development. Attempting to cut foods out of your diet completely, especially sweets and fats tends to have a backlash effect. When the child does have access to these foods they may gorge themselves on them leading to overeating and binge eating. It is better to allow these things in small amounts.

Taking the children to the grocery store with you, although a headache in many ways, is a good way to teach them about making healthy food choices. They will, of course, migrate towards the junk for aisle but with a little coaching you can teach them to find the healthy foods that they enjoy. After they have made good choices you can allow them to choose a small snack of chips or soda or the like. This will reinforce the idea that junk food is a treat and not an integral part of their regular diet.

Eating meals together as a family is not only a good way to encourage good eating habits but it can be an important way to keep everyone in touch with each other. As children get older and more involved with activities outside the home it becomes harder and harder to keep everyone in the loop. Sitting down for a healthy meal with20the television and phones turned off provides an ideal time to just sit and talk. It is also the proper time to teach them good table manners and to take the time to enjoy their food. Eating rapidly, as children so often do, tends to lead to overeating because the body does not have time to react and let you know that you are full.

Finally, remember that children learn by example. If you want them to develop healthy eating habits then you must practice what you preach. Make sure that the foods you keep in the home and that the choices that you yourself make fit with the habits that you are trying to teach them.
