Why Independents Might Think John McCain is a Grand Old Person

May 12, 2008. John McCain gives a landmark speech on global warming in Oregon. A state that is 34% Independent. Pivoting from George W. Bush's do-nothing approach to global warming, McCain expertly distances himself from his albatross (George W. Bush).

That is one reason why Independents in America may look at a John McCain presidency. With Hillary Clinton winning the majority of blue-collar American votes, McCain could possibly pull off a stunning and unexpected Presidential victory in the fall.

Take a look at John McCain's Health Care Plan. Regrettably, to Democrats, it is not universal health care. But, to Independents and those who would call themselves Libertarians, his health care plan might just fit. People like Rush Limbaugh would never let the sheep who eat grass at his feet each day move towards 'socialist' universal health care. But, a tax credit of $5,000 where each citizen can choose their own health care plan. Well, that is a plan worth looking into.

Now, we come to Iraq. Americans are fed up with Iraq. Americans want our troops to come home. Americans blame our economic downturn on the Iraq War, and should.

However, there is no easy exit and clear thinking voters might realize after listening with an open mind to McCain that he is not saying we should stay for '100 years'. He is stating the obvious truth. We will have to stay until we meet some as yet nondescript line in the sand.

Democrats are saying they will begin to pull us out of the war upon election. I, for one, do not believe this will happen. I believe that will be the first disappointment in a Democratic presidency if it does take place.

I have been a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat since I could vote. And, quite obviously, I have voted for a number of losers in the past decades. Most, notably, John Kerry, who would not get my vote today. As a citizen of the great country I believe it is our civic duty to vote. But, if John Kerry and sitting home became my only choice ever again in this lifetime, I would sit home.

Unfortunately, for all of the Obama fans out there, I am sifting through the same decision. One vote does matter. One vote signifies the thought processes behind the person. Not the demographic.

Today's Americans while being pigeonholed into demographic slots might be uneducated and vote for Hillary, might be wine drinkers and vote for Obama, and might just be Independent and vote Republican for the first time.
