Why Insomniac Games Will Remain with Sony

Insomniac Games is one of the most respected development studios in the entire gaming industry. The developer of Spyro, Ratchet & Clank and Resistance is more than just about producing video games, they are also quite active with their fan base in addition to being one of the best small employers in the gaming industry.

Although Insomniac Games is an independent company, they are a second-party developer for Sony. As a result, all of their games only appear on the Playstation, Playstation 2 and Playstation 3. Here are a few reasons why Insomniac Games prefer to stay as a second-party developer for Sony and the Playstation platforms.

Focus on Single Platforms
Insomniac Games business model is to release a new game every year. Thus, they need to focus development exclusively on one video game systems. Simply put, having to port a game to another video game system costs time and money for Insomniac Games. For that reason, the original Spyro trilogy only appeared on the Playstation, Ratchet & Clank series on Playstation 2 and Playstation 3 and Resistance series on Playstation 3.

Sony's Relationship with Developers
Of course, Insomniac Games could have chosen Nintendo instead of Sony. However, Nintendo hasn't been known for partnering with western studios. Sony, on the other hand, has been quite active with recruiting developers since they entered the gaming industry in the mid-1990s with the original Playstation. It also helped that the Playstation and Playstation 2 were two of the best-selling video game systems ever.

While the Playstation 3 may not be doing as well, development studios like Insomniac Games prefer working with Sony due to their strong relationships with them.

Naughty Dog
Insomniac Games is also quite good friends with a couple of Sony's development core. Perhaps the most famous of which is their friendship with first-party developer Naughty Dog. The two studios used to work at close proximity. They were able to maintain a strong relationship as both grew from small developers into become some of the best in the business. With a strong bond with other Playstation developers as well, Insomniac Games has no better place to be.

Financial Success
Finally, Insomniac Games became successful on Playstation platforms. Their rise started with Spyro on Playstation and continued with Ratchet & Clank series on Playstation 2 and Playstation 3. They are doing better than ever financially right now thanks to the Resistance series that debuted on the Playstation 3. So while Sony's third console may be struggling, Insomniac Games is striving on the platform.

Because of the above reasons, you can expect Insomniac Games to continue working with Sony for the foreseeable future.

Oliver: Epic and Valve have worked on the playstation platform before so that is why ppl say they should put stuff on the ps3.

If Imsomniac, Naughty Dog won't change their minds, I don't see why Epic, Bungie and Valve should go on PS3 platform as they are similarly if not more successful on Xbox 360. I would prefer all titles to be multiplatform but at the same time, there would be no competition. Less competition = Less quality

I have no idea why they dont go multiplat seriousloy.

every single game they release will IMMEDIATLY double in sales and i can guarantee you the 360 version sells more

    Good Article.
I agree, Insomniac Games do fine on Playstation and it has no reason to change the way they make the're business. I'm glad i have a PS3 so i can play Resistance 1 and 2 and Ratchet and Clank.
