Why Iowa Does Not Need Bob Vander Plaats

How does a rational mind operate? A rational mind operates on logic. It processes information in a logical manner, and communicates in a similar manner. When a rational person communicates with another person or persons, the goal is to convey or exchange information. The information can be factual, opinion, or both.

" No sense makes sense. " This was the first, immediate reaction to an online article a few months ago.. A logical mind would approach an issue with "This is what I think or believe;" it may even extend to include "and because I think or believe this, so should you." However, some prefer "No sense makes sense" over logic and rationality-- rather than acknowledging the listener or reader as being on equal ground and able to form conclusions on his or her own, this approach attempts to confuse the listener or reader by making it appear as if it is something altogether different.

"If the courts will do that on this issue, what's to say they won't do it on your Second Amendment rights or eminent domain or any other issue?" Vander Platts said. "I believe we need to hold the courts in check. If they will do this to marriage, every one of your freedoms are up for grabs."

Wishing to get rid of the Iowa Supreme Court members who voted in favor of allowing same-sex marriage, Bob Vander Plaats took the "No sense makes sense" approach. It is not about what he believes is right or wrong, nor about what he believes others should consider right or wrong; instead, he has attempted to stir up fears and frenzies, claiming all of the voters' "rights" and "freedoms" are at stake. Bob Vander Plaats has attempted to strike fear in the hearts and minds of Iowa's voters-- because the court has decided to allow people to do something which he himself does not believe in.

Throwing panic into people is an easy way to get what one wants. The outcome of this particular issue in the recent election shows this. Do the voters of Iowa really believe Vander Plaats' scare-tactics? Does the average straight adult really believe the court's decision to allow gay couples to legally marry means his or her own personal "rights" and "freedoms" are in jeopardy? It does not matter whether you are liberal or conservative, democrat or republican, gay or straight; what does matter is realizing Bob Vander Plaats, with this "No sense makes sense" approach, wishes to get in the way of your ability to form your own opinion on the subject by scaring you into believing it is about something else. Even if you are one-hundred-percent opposed to same-sex marriage, not a single one of your personal rights and freedoms are at stake from the court's decision to allow it. Perhaps it is time for Iowa's voters to decide there is really no place in Iowa politics for someone who employs scare-tactics to get his own way.
