Why It's a Bad Idea to Lock Up Your Female Dog if They're in Heat to Prevent Pregnancy

Before you read this article, I am posting a warning about some true, but graphical text written in here about a dog that hurt her self. This text also contains things about dogs being in heat, which means it is more on the adult side of topics.

Years ago my parents drove their car out of Nassauville to do business, on the way out they discovered a abandoned orange puppy. We took this puppy in because we do not like to see animals suffer, and we believed that no one else would take her in.

This puppy was a female, and because she was lucky to have been saved, we called her Lucky Lady. Lucky Lady's breed was unknown to us, but it looked like she was part chow. She was a tame and loving dog.

When Lucky started her period and was in heat, we put effort to try and prevent her from getting pregnant. One thing we tried was to tie her up with a rope so she could not run the neighbor hood. Lucky tried to get loose so badly, that she cut her neck with the rope trying to force the rope off. The cut had gone all the way down to her neck bone, it was a disgusting sight when I found it.

I had taken the rope of her head because of the cut, and she had left the yard to run the neighbor hood for days before we saw her again. She would usually show back up at the house, but then she stopped coming home. My friend that lived not to far from where he found her, told me what happened to her. She had been struck by a car, and it killed her.

About another dog my neighbor has, is a bit pull that he locked up in his house during her heat. She was irritated all the time, and as a result she would wine and try to hump his lug. After he mated her with another bull dog, all of her wining and odd behavior stopped.

These dogs get desperate when they go in heat, and I have found out that some of them would kill themselves trying to get loose. Its obvious to me when a female dog goes in heat, and she can not mate it causes her irritating pain. My finding is that its best to let your female dog mate when she goes in heat.

If you have a problem with your dog having puppies, then she simple needs to be spayed. It will save your dog from a lot of suffering, rather than locking her up.

Um, this is an old post and all, but Jointer West, you really are a moron. You expect anyone to take someone's ignorant advice seriously when you tied a rope around a dog's neck and was going to leave it on a tree for two weeks? I hope YOU never breed.

Why would you tie your dog up outside if they are in heat? That just seems kind of stupid. You should have them in your sight from the second they go into season until they are done and get them spayed as soon as they finish.

Letting your dog mate so they don't 'suffer' is a terrible idea. Why don't you go take a look around a shelter to see the product of 'wonderful ideas' such as this.
