Why It's Important Not to Neglect Your Body's Physical Condition

Thom W. Conroy
As we age, it becomes fairly obvious that none of us are as fit and trim or capable physically as we were in our younger days. While this is widely accepted as an unfortunate fact of life, many among us are limited in our choices due to inactivity and neglect of our most precious resource - our physical health and conditioning. Neglect of your body's physical condition and the refusal to take measures to reverse a sudden deterioration is one of the main causes of premature illness and death, and is in large part avoidable to the extent that actions can be taken to ensure extended good health. We are each responsible for our own health and well-being in the sense that when physical conditioning becomes an issue in association with maintaining good health, we individually have the power to make a change for the better.

When we allow our physical condition to worsen from the optimum, we open the door to any number of diseases and illnesses that may have otherwise never had the opportunity to impact our lives negatively. Heart and blood pressure issues, diabetes, respiratory issues and joint pain are rampant in those individuals that are "out-of-shape" and in many instances are the resulting cause of death and strokes. The need to consume pharmaceuticals increases considerably in proportion with a person's lack of physical fitness, and the associated costs and side effects of the medications serve as reminders that the necessity is all based upon a lack of concern for personal health at a time when personal control could have changed the outcome.

Good physical conditioning enables an individual to participate in activities that would otherwise be beyond the scope of reach. The overall quality of life and the ability to participate in it to the greatest enjoyment is enhanced by being physically fit, and the opportunities for social interaction is increased by the number of possible events and activities one may find themselves engaged in regularly. There is a definite domino effect of being in good physical condition - the more active an individual is the more active that person will likely stay, simply because the possibilities for participation are greatly increased.

Perhaps the best thing about not neglecting your body's physical condition is that it affords us more time on earth with greater enjoyment. A good way to think of it is that for every hour we spend on staying physically fit, we may well be awarded another full day in our lifespan.
