Why It's Necessary to Research Before Buying a Hybrid Car

The conventional internal combustion engines, fired by gasoline, have been in production for a very long time so that they have few noticeable changes over the years, and the differences between the products of competitors in the automotive field are minimal. But, hybrid cars are quite new in their technology and in case you want to buy one of them, you will be required to do some homework. There are different technologies in hybrid car development, which are constantly being updated and witnessing spectacular improvement.

The basic concept of a hybrid car is the combination of an electric motor and a set of batteries with the gasoline engine. The electric motor can assist the engine, or can solely power the car at low speeds. This means the hybrid car can be fitted with a relatively smaller, but more efficient engine which will still give good performance. The gasoline engine as well as the energy derived from braking, can recharge the batteries. Hence a hybrid car need not be plugged into the domestic power supply, like an all-electric car.

The options available for buying a hybrid car range from small two-seaters to full-sized SUVs and pick-up trucks. Honda's Insight is a two-seater which has a three cylinder engine with battery assist. It is reported that this hybrid car can yield up to 100 mpg, but you have to be careful when driving in mainstream traffic.

All the leading auto manufacturers like Ford, Dodge, Chevy, Toyota, Lexus, etc., have introduced hybrid SUVs which use various combinations of gasoline and electric power for various driving modes to optimize fuel consumption; yet they are big and heavy vehicles, so their fuel economy has limited range. Some hybrid SUVs like the Chevy have moderate towing capability, but still yield the fuel economy of a conventional midsize sedan.

The Prius from Toyota and the Civic from Honda rule the hybrid car scenario. The Toyota Prius was the first hybrid car to be mass-produced and continues to be the top selling hybrid car. It has been constantly updated, and has become more powerful and more streamlined. Yet it still keeps its unique design intact, so that it can be easily identified as a hybrid car. But the Honda Civic has the same styling as its non-hybrid siblings. This renders the Civic a hybrid car in disguise, which may negatively affect its sales to prospective customers who would like to flaunt their possession of a hybrid car.

For the Civic's advantage, its engine which is smaller delivers more power than the Prius's engine. Though this aspect provides the Civic with an advantage in fuel economy, yet the comparison may be considered unfair as the Prius is a midsize car whereas the Civic is a compact.

new developments and advancements are being introduced into the hybrid car market. You can browse the Web to get up-to-date information on the latest developments in hybrid car technology.

The option to buy a hybrid car is an environment-friendly gesture, and it can be a good option for you too.
