Why It's Red Hot to Be a Senior Citizen

Betty White, Sidney Harman & Kathy Griffin's Mom Maggie Dazzle as Dynamic Seniors

Will Stape
Youngsters - everyone under 40 these days - watch out! There's a few new, old kids on the block. Everywhere you turn today, old folks are teaching the young a thing or two. In TV news and talk shows, to Hollywood and magazine publishing, golden girl senior citizens like Betty White, Barbara Walters, or veteran businessmen like Sidney Harman are proving not only can you teach old dogs new tricks, but they can teach all of us something about real success and longevity.

Betty White 88

When a Facebook campaign basically demanded that veteran actress Betty White (Golden Girls) host NBC's Saturday Night Live, not everybody thought it would actually happen. Not only did the twinkly eyed comedian rock the late night comedy world, but she earned an Emmy nomination for her efforts. She's also co-star of the new hit sitcom Hot In Cleveland on TV Land. Somewhere co-stars Bea Arthur, Rue Mcclanahan and Estelle Getty must indeed be smiling.

Maggie Griffin 90

Kathy Griffin, energetic diva and star of My Life On The D-List on Bravo, may still think she's on the D List, but her mom wants to be an A List author - or at least B List. Her book Tip It! - about the joys of drinking box wine - earned her rave reviews, and promises this senior has more in her than just reprimands for her famous comedian daughter.

Sidney Harman 91

Sidney Harman is the oldest on the list, but it's not slowing him down. He just bought Newsweek Magazine, and has big plans for it. In a Washington Post news release, Harman said, ""Newsweek is a national treasure. I am enormously pleased to be succeeding The Washington Post Company and the Graham family, and look forward to this great journalistic, business and technological challenge." Harman made his name and fortune as a pioneer in the high fidelity stereo business, and he's still making beautiful music in business at the amazing age of 91.

Barbara Walters 80

Compared to the others on this list, history making television news anchor and personality Barbara Walters is still a baby in chronological age. She still excels at a demanding TV career as creator, executive producer and co-host of one of the hottest daytime talk shows, The View. Despite her recent heart surgery, she returned early to help interview President Barack Obama. Walters welcomed President Obama as the first sitting American Commander In Chief to appear on a daytime talk show. How's that for an octogenarian TV pioneer?

Enthusiasm and activity keep anyone young. It's an attitude.

We should be so lucky at their age.

I would hope to live to Betty White's age with 1/2 of her enthusiasm, skill and sheer joi de vie!

It would be nice but I won't hold my breath. I think there are always anomalies. As a whole, our culture does not respect the elderly. If I had a penny for every young person I've heard recently say they wished we would just hurry up and die because it is their world now, I'd be a millionaire.

I hope (God willing!) when I am 80+ years of age, that I am busy, active and enjoying the Golden years like Betty White and Barbara :) cheers!
