Why Jesus was Not the Messiah

Or for the Purposes of This Article, the Moshiach

S. Landis
As someone who is not Jewish who was raised in a non-Mainstream Christian faith, I often used to think of Judaism's theology as "like Christian theology pretty much, except without Jesus." Before Jews of professional theologians start to scream and shout at me, a little research corrected my misapprehension. Unfortunately, many Christians will happily remain ignorant of the tradition of faith in which their savior came from and still hold this view.

What the word Messiah means to Jews and what the word means to Christians have lost connection with each other over the centuries. So much so that according to the helpful website, jewfaq.org that Jews do not like to use the English word, preferring the Hebrew term, moshiach instead

The first notion Christians must disabuse themselves of is that messiah equals Jesus. The messiah or moshiach as the idea will be referred to in the rest of this article is someone who is yet to come. Much like Christ means anointed on in Greek, Moshiach means the same thing. However, the word does not mean savior.

The Moshiach is expected to reestablish his people in Israel, and to be descended from King David, establish a government in Israel govern both Jews and Gentiles. (Mormons, take note, in this context a gentile is someone who is not Jewish.), rebuild the temple in Jerusalem, and will establish the Jewish law as the law of the land. In some ways, the characteristics will be similar to that of the second coming expected by Christians, but how the moshiach comes about will differ. Some Jewish theologians theorize that in every generation a person is born with the potential to be the moshiach. Because Jesus failed to do any of the above, Jews reject the Christian claim of his being the moshiach, or in Christian terms the messiah.

According to a PDF which can be downloaded or read online at the Jews for Judiasm website, Jesus failed the conditions because he failed to perfect the world. If someone does along who manages to do that, fulfills all other biblical prophecies concerning him, that person will be recognized as the promised anointed one.

Arguing over something that may occur in the future may seem silly to most people, but when it comes to religion, well, let us just say that Christianity's record of treatment of the members of their parent faith, while greatly improved from things like the Inquistion still needs some correction among Conservative Christian sects.

Jesus is NOT the messiah. In fact, he and his followers caused more darkness in the world than anybody else did, so I suggest you christians do research on that. It's possible that Jesus set up the whole thing, the miracles, demonic possessions, death and the resurrection to fool people into thinking he was the solution. The true messiah will bring real peace and justice.

G-d gave the Jews the means to inherit the World to Come in the 613 mitzvos (commandments) given at Sinai. The Gentile world has the 7 Noachide Laws. No requirement is given in Torah for a human sacrifice, neither is the shedding of blood the only means of atonement. These can be determined through scripture. So, either G-d changed His mind, or forgot what He had said earlier, and came up with this whole "Jesus" thing. I think not. You can go to my posts to see the origin of the Jesus mythos and documented biblical proof that he is not G-d.

I disagree that our journey to our fulfullment in God has many paths. Many people feel you need to be a "good person" and try your hardest and you will have that deep satsifaction in your soul that so many restless people long for. How do you know you are good enough? If God graded us all on that curve you would never know where you stood with him. There are millions of people in this world. I would bet to say there are alot of people in this world doing alot more than any of us are who are reading this comment right now. So, where do you fall in the "good enough" spectrum? The only faith that has that answer is by being completely forgiven for your short comings. And the only way we can do that is through the Christian faith and accepting that Jesus blood was the atonement for our sins. No other religion offers that certainty that we are right with God. No matter how good you are, how many times you try to live up to what God wants for you in life you will never make it be

He's not the Messiah! He's just a very naughty boy!

I agree. Even though you know I ALWAYS agree with You (Lara), I feel compelled to explain why I agree. Jesus made it His mission to bring us to convicting ourselves of how stupid we are. He showed us how to live, and made it clear that it was OUR responsibility to listen and hear (rather than just 'listen and stay stupid') "He is the Way, the Truth and the Life," not 'the Judge, Jury or Executioner.' The Moschack (or whatever) will simply be the lucky guy who's Head-of-the-Household (or whatever) when everybody wakes up and stops being stupid.

And Alban, these are not my beliefs but merely an attempt to explain what other people believe.

And if you tried to preach in this thread, you are very, very wrong.

And this one did suffer because I did not even take time to look at it before accepting publication

I am still in search of my faith and I found your article interesting but it was very hard to follow.

What can I say? Your article is very interesting, but Jesus is the Messiah and my Savior.

The journey to our fulfillment in God has many paths. The destination is the same no matter who's path we follow. God has given us choices and a mind to help us. Thank You for sharin' you beliefs. ;-}}>
