Why J.K. Rowling is My Favourite Author of All Time

Kyra Lennon

J.K. Rowling's name is now famous all over the world. When the idea for the story of Harry Potter entered her head, she could never have predicted what an incredible success her books would be. From humble beginnings to worldwide fame, J.K Rowling is proof that reaching your dreams is possible if you have a creative mind and the determination to work hard.

Joanne Kathleen Rowling grew up on the outskirts of Bristol in the South West of England, and Chepstow in Wales. She always enjoyed making up stories, but it wasn't until 1990 that she created Harry Potter and began writing the series of books which is now loved by millions. After moving to Portugal, getting married and giving birth to her first child, she moved back to the UK after her marriage broke up. It was in Edinburgh where Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was finished, and eventually picked up by a publisher.

The seven Harry Potter books tell the story of a young wizard who grew up in the world of Muggles (non-magical people) with his aunt, uncle and cousin who took him in after his parents died when Harry was just a year old. On discovering he wasn't as normal as he had thought, he left the unhappy home he had always lived in and went to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. His story got darker and more dangerous as he discovered that the most feared wizard of all time had killed his parents, and wanted revenge on the boy child who had somehow robbed him of his powers. With a combination of magic, myth and an incredible amount of real human emotion, Rowling's books captured the imaginations of children and adults alike.

What makes J.K Rowling such an incredible novelist is not only her ability to create a good story. It's her attention to detail, and her desire to make the characters real, even though they were in a magical setting. Her words have made me cry and laugh out loud. They made me feel, they made me think and they made me crave every new book more than the last. It takes a special kind of talent to draw in so many people and gain enough popularity to warrant movies, merchandise and even a special theme park!

When I picked up the first Harry Potter book, I didn't know what I was getting into. I didn't know how lost I would get in the magic. I have spent countless hours debating, speculating and theorising as to what each new story would bring. Some may consider that a waste of time. Not to me. I see it as an indication of just how amazing J.K Rowling's work really is.
