Many people take jobs as dental assistants in prisons because they just want to help people. They feel that dental care should be available to all, regardless of who they are and what crime they have committed. Other people feel that it would be a great challenge and something out of the ordinary.
One of the cons regarding working as a dental assistant in a prison is due to the fact that health risks are much higher. Always make sure that if you are planning on getting a job in a prison as dental assistant that you are aware of the policies and procedures regarding health and cleanliness. A prison can be a very unsanitary place and can be a breeding ground for disease and other illness. Some inmates may also try to escape or do things that may hurt or harm you so always be careful if you decide to work in a prison as a dental assistant.
Most prison dental offices have secure operating facilities where they are locked in a room with a hygienist to do their work and they cannot get out unless the guard lets them out. Most of the time these places are secure, but there is always a chance that an inmate can overpower you and try to do something to escape or harm you. They may also try to steal tools to use in prison to hurt or harm another individual.
Employment as a dental assistant in a prison, may or may not be right for you. There are many benefits to taking a job like this, but it is not for everyone. If you want a career that is rewarding and pays well, this might be something to consider, but always make sure that you weigh the risks involved with such a position before taking the job. If you know the job will be right for you, it probably will be.
