Why John Edwards Legal Problem Makes Him "Terrified of Going to Jail"

Pat Bartels
John Edwards legal problems are one example of what is wrong with our judicial system. The wealthy and politicians seem to think they are above the law. They are able to make deals that normal people simply can't.

When you decide to run for a political office, you must know that your conduct and business dealings are an open book. If you publicly get caught in a lie, you will pay the consequences. That's exactly what is happening to Mr. Edwards. Although, the consequences for someone of his stature are not the same as they would be for an ordinary citizen.

This is all about funds that were given to Mr. Edwards by a "friend" that was subsequently used in covering up his affair and illegitimate child with Rielle Hunter. In order for the government to work out a deal, they would want Edwards to plead guilty to some sort of charge. If the deal is to plead guilty to a felony, he would be unable to practice law. You can't get a law license if you are a convicted felon.

How many friends do you have that are willing to give you a gift of $700,000? This money is what is being investigated. Edwards claims that the money was a personal gift and not a campaign contribution. According to an article written by CNN Politics, a grand jury is trying to decide if this money was actually "unreported campaign funds."

Will a deal be struck and Edwards be relieved of his legal problems? He is "terrified of going to jail," but he has the legal team and money to make his punishment less severe than for the ordinary guy on the street. Maybe he really doesn't deserve to go to jail, and he can just be forgiven for his poor judgment. What do you think? Has he suffered enough?

I hope that he gets what he deserves, but doubt that he does. People rarely do! Great article.

Pat, I don't know what to think about John Edwards. I wanted to tell you that I may not be around much the next few days.....We've had a bit of a family crisis here. It feels like a "tornado" ripped thru our lives in NY. My disabled cousin (and friend) who we visit often, died suddenly of heart failure yesterday. I'm trying to help w/ her arrangements & her dogs. cheers
