I picture k.d. picking me up in Pasadena in a Prius or other hybrid car. It is lunchtime and she is a vegetarian so we go to a vegan fast food place in Pasadena and get some take away. This restaurant is:
ORLEAN HEALTH EXPRESS
817 N Lake Ave
Pasadena, Ca
626 794 0861
We pick up a couple of veggie burritos and head off to the nearby mountains to eat our food and go for a little hike. We drive on up Lake to its end and turn left on Alta Loma then right on Chaney Trail Drive. We drive a little into the mountains. I picture k.d. as a skilled driver. We arrive at a stream and campground and eat out burritos. k.d. is wearing her usual oversized Levis and shirt and she is looking great.
She seems like the kind of person who would like to hike so we hike and rock hop upstream until we reach Millard Falls where the stream makes a drop off a sheer cliff above us. Thoughts turn to romance and there may be a kiss or two. We stay for quite a while and k.d. tells me about her Bhuddist teacher and what she has learned. Her rosy cheeks are even rosier in the brisk mountain air.
We are surprised that we are hungry and that it is suppertime; the hours have slipped away so quickly. Since k.d. is still a vegetarian, we eat at:
ALL INDIA CAFE
39 South Fair Oaks
Pasadena Ca
626 440 0309
The restaurant has many delicious vegetarian dishes and we have a feast fit for a celebrity. k.d. is obviously recognized by several other diners but they are polite and leave her alone. One young woman does come up and ask for an autograph and k.d. graciously gives it to her.
I once saw k.d. at a lesbian play at:
THE VILLAGE AT ED GOULD PLAZA
1125 N. McCadden Place
Los Angeles, Ca. 90038
323 860 7302
Because both of us have seen and enjoyed plays at the Village before, I have gotten tickets to a lesbian play for tonight. k.d. spins us off down the Pasadena Freeway and we are at the Village in no time. We wait in line like everyone else because the seating is first come first served. People talk to k.d. and me like k.d. was an old friend and she has been a very good friend to the Gay and Lesbian Center of which the Village is a part.
The play starts off with a completely naked woman who slowly puts on her clothes and is hilarious, well acted, directed and produced.
Driving back to Pasadena, k.d. announces she has a surprise for me. She has booked a room at the:
THE HUNTINGTION RITZ CARLTON
1401 South Oak Knoll Ave.
Pasadena, Ca
626 568 3900
We arrive and the valet takes the car. k.d. registers and I feel a little embarrassed because we have no luggage and we are not exactly dressed for a stay at the Hotel.
We get to our room and the door closes on the hall and on the rest of this story.
