Why You Should Keep Your Garage Door Opener with You

Sunshine Red
Your garage door opener can be a real timesaver when you are getting home from a long day at the office with the kids and the groceries loaded in the car. You can pull your vehicle in the garage and save time by not getting out and opening the door, and then getting back in the vehicle to move the vehicle again. Most people keep their garage door openers above the sun visor or lying out in plain sight in their vehicles not giving it a second thought. But there has been in the news in Charlotte, North Carolina about an increase in home burglaries because of the garage door opener. Here is how it is being done and what you can do to prevent it from happening to you.

The burglars are breaking into vehicles not to steal the vehicle but to grab the garage door opener and the registration cards for the vehicle. They are not taking anything else from the vehicle in fact you may not even miss the items till you try to open your garage door with the remote. But with these two items they are set to go and rob your home. They not only have easy access to your home now, but with the registration card they know exactly where you live. They are able to get in and out without breaking anything like doors and windows and attracting attention to themselves. It appears that it is easier to break into a vehicle then a house.

Once they get access to your home they will take what they want and leave closing the garage door behind them. The neighbors don't notice anything because they could park their car in your garage and load it then back it out when they are done.

What you can do to protect yourself is to make sure that you have your alarm systems set when you leave your vehicle and your home. When you leave your vehicle, take your garage door opener with you. It's small enough to fit in your purse or carry it with you so it's not left in your vehicle all day. Take any mail or information that has your address on out of the vehicle. While most people carry the registration cards in the glove box, try to find a new hiding place for it.

This is just one of the newest ways that burglars are trying to rob you while you are away from home.

Shouldn't surprise me, but it does - Thanks for the head's up. I also live in a high vehicular crime area, so knowledge is POWER :-)

Good advice. Also, I have a friend who found an alarm system where you hear a dog bark instead of the usual sound. when I find out where to get it, i'm going to get one.
