Why Kids Need Homework

Todd Hicks
Are you the parent of kids who dread and complain about doing homework? Are you a teacher who is wondering whether he or she should assign it on a regular basis? You probably remember some of the days when you were miserable as you were doing it when you were young. Although it is not always fun to do homework, it has a good purpose. By reading this article, you will learn some of the ways that doing homework is an aid to children.

First Benefit: This can give students the opportunity to work with the teachers more. They can discuss their homework or the sections of their textbooks the homework is based on with the teachers before or after class.

Second Benefit: It enables them to get help from their parents, brothers and sisters. By going over their work with those they live with, they can gain a better understanding of their courses.

Third Benefit: They can use what they have done in a study group. The kids can study together while discussing their graded assignments and helping one another see what they did right and what they did wrong.

Fourth Benefit: This is a good opportunity to practice and have an easier time seeing what it takes to be successful in school. As they say, "Practice makes perfect."

Fifth Benefit: This is a great way to develop responsibility. By being assigned work to turn in another day, they will have to make sure they do what they are supposed to do and then bring the material back to class.

Sixth Benefit: The parents can see how their children are being educated. They can see what is being taught and subsequently get a better idea of how to provide assistance.

Seventh Benefit: The students will have an easier time discovering what they have and do not have while getting ready for the big stage. Doing homework helps prepare kids for taking tests. If a child does poorly on an assignment, he or she will learn what is necessary to master the next test while not being penalized heavily, as homework does not make up as much of the total course grade as the tests.

Eighth Benefit: This can reduce boredom. The students will have something to do when there is nothing to watch on television and it is too dark to play outside.

You have learned how doing homework helps children.
